Quickly developing into one of Sydney’s premier promotions companies Sweetchilli has had a mammoth last few months bringing out a slew of huge names such as John Digweed, Steve Porter and this month Desyn Masiello, this doesn’t slow down in December with Sasha, Zabiela and Nic Fanucelli being added to this list. This event doubles as the launch of the next in the series of very successful and extremely high quality Balance mix series (now up to its eight installment). Each of the Balance releases comprises of a two disc release showcasing some of the hottest progressive DJ’s around the globe, previous names including superstars such as James Holden, Chris Fortier, and Anthony Pappa. Desyn however has burst into popularity amongst the progressive house scene with his quality sets and great attitude and has caught the ear of some of the worlds largest DJs such as Deep Dish, Sander K and Danny Howells. He has also worked hard at establishing his own sound that crosses boundaries and genres and makes his sound difficult to categorize.

When we arrived at the venue Robbie Lowe was already hammering out some great funky prog tracks and getting the crowd suitably warmed up. It is always great seeing Robbie on the line up as it is almost a guarantee of hearing some amazing tracks of the variety that simply make you need to hit the dance floor. After a few drinks and many grooving tunes Desyn stepped up to begin his set a little under half an hour late, to begin his five hour set. The set kick off with some cool groovy tracks following in the vibe set by Robbie Lowe. As the time flew by he took it deep and then threw in some fun melodic house which resulted in several hands in the air moments.

After a couple of hours he was belting out some tight very danceable tech house tunes and big room prog tunes. As the set continued on he continued to cover a variety of tunes including some absolutely massive bassline tracks. Some of the highlight tunes played throughout the set included Chris Lake – Changes, Roland Klinkenberg – Funk the Key Word, Joey Negro – Make a Move On Me and Coburn – We Interrupt This Program. The set covered everything from house classics, deep, tech, funky and progressive. The set also flowed so incredibly smoothly due to the fact that he re-edits many tracks to fit his sound better using Ableton or Pro Tools.

I must say (despite probably saying this a tad too often) that it was seriously up there as one of the best sets I have heard all year. Desyn continually changed up the vibe of the set and kept pulling out a variety of jaw dropping huge tracks to keep the crowd on the dance floor going crazy. It was great to see him enjoying himself throughout the set, as he was really getting into the vibe with the front of the crowd, who were out of control (in a good way of course). Throughout the set there was also a number of visual spectacles to keep you entertained if the music wasn’t enough, with a couple of young ladies getting quite comfortable up on stage, and well… much kissing and grinding to follow.  The sound in the venue on the night must also be commended highly as I don’t think I have heard it all round that phat and clear any other time at Candy’s Apartment, and the volume was adequately loud to really let you feel those big room progressive tunes. Strangely enough though security made you leave drinks outside the toilets which is perhaps a little bit of overkill and personally I don’t like parting with my drinks at a venue.

In summary, this was another smashing night successful both in terms of showcasing some outstanding tunes delivered by one of the scenes latest sensations, and also from the perspective of the venue, sound, vibe and atmosphere. It was great to head back to Candy’s Apartment for the type of music I love as this venue has such a cool underground feel (due mainly to the fact that it is underground) and always leads to an intimate gig. As usual it was also great to catch up with all the Sweetchilli regulars and ITM people which is another thing that makes these events so much fun. After such an amazing set I am looking forward to the quickly approaching Renaissance Summer Ball which will be on this Saturday. See you at the next one!
