Hangovers, headaches, lack of sleep from the night before are all characteristics of New Years day, and so is Sun Electric, the festival that keeps those that want to, kicking on. In the Broke Down palace this year was 10sui, UK’s General Midi plus Aussie stars Infusion, Zombie Nation, Tom Middleton and Spektrum….
Nursing a very nasty hangover, I made the short journey to Belmont Park. Feeling a bit under the weather I went straight to the bar for some water and food. Surprisingly Gully was still playing when Max Graham was supposed to be on , and it was then I learnt that a flight full of acts was delayed and the set times thrown into chaos. Gully stepped down and 10sui made her appearance for what was to be a mammoth 3 hour set. Starting pretty deep, Sui played a chilled number that initially cleared the dance floor a bit before finally banging a beat out and it quickly filled back up again. Last time 10sui was here was a very cheesy, ragga infused set so it was a welcome change this time to have a more bassline sound with more tearout vibes happening. About an hour into her set you could see one of the ground staff say something to her, and it was soon learned that she would keep playing for another two hours or so . Taking things back, 10sui went into a bit of 4/4 then bringing it back up again to the more bassline sound again. Tracks that were highlights were Stantons remix of Rocker, New Jammin on Bing Beats called “That’s the way” and the massive Distoritionz Remix of ILS Next Level.
General Midi finally stepped up after what seemed like an eternity and played probably what I rate as the best breaks Dj set id seen in 12 months. One punter accurately described it as “Proper non cheesey Breaks”. The new material that is to come out in the coming months from Midi is well good to look forward to . The only track I recognized in the set was his single from the album “Midi Style” titled “Turn it Loud”.
Confusion for Infusion then reigned. What seemed like one band member setting up turned out to be Zombie Nation who wasn’t scheduled for the room, He played for about 45 min before handing the stage to Infusion who rocked out their trade mark sound. It was then after infusion that the Brokedown palace died in the ass. Tom Middleton had about 10 peoepl on the dance floor including himself at some points, but this in no way reflects the quality of tunes that were played. A good mix of house and funky breaks and a bit of electro.
The last act on the bill was Spektrum and was something that I found very hard to get into . The tunes were very chilled and not suited for a 1am set, im sure they were musically great , but the small amount of people on the floor soon disappeared and the arena was shut early.
Overall the event had teething problems which were largely out of control of the promoters which was unfortunate because I actually had fun at this event. The arena’s were set up a bit strangely as it took a while for me to find the brokedown palace. 6 stroked chins out of 10.
