Ok, so this was my first Room 680 experience….I kinda knew what I was in for being in Hawthorn and all that but lordy… I walked into a packed, smokey, aftershave and faux hawk ridden room a little after midnight, and I made my way to the bar to get a drink and listen to Mark James spin some nice classic 80’s retro remixes, ending with the new Depeche Mode single A Pain That I’m Used To remix…Wikked! I just had to have a boogie to that one.
I then got another drink just as Spektrum took to the upper stage, nice golden lightshow, terrible mix. I should interject here that these guys are a 3 piece band from the UK and I had never heard of them before. I was not impressed. Lead singer Lola Olafisoye has an amazing voice, very Grace Jones, however I feel it was lost within the confines of the pop rock style band Spektrum are. They are pretty hard to define actually; strong female vocals, dancey electronic drums (live), triggered sequences and live bass player. But something was missing, it had no depth imho.
After about half their set I wandered off to see what was going on in the other room and could someone please tell me who was playing ?! His photo is on the nights pictures page, white tshirt, headphones round neck. He played some of my favourite electro tracks and was tearin it up! Alas, an extremely packed (and small) dancefloor prevented my much desired boogie from happening. Shame he didnt get to play in the main room. After ‘he who is yet to be named’ (some reviewer I am huh? :P) was Mark Hamilton, again some very nice tunes and the room had thinned out enough to move….because Tiefschwarz were starting!
I headed back into the main room just in time to hear the ‘announcer’ (gottta love cheesey DJ announcers hehe) say:”put your hands together for Tiefschwarrrrrrrrzzzz” :D
And on they came, finally the place was unified, everyone dancing, girls in cages, the whole lot!
These brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz sure know how to rock it and play very well together. Their track selection was pretty damn good for the most part, lots of fat funky dirty bass lines and electro goodness. They dont overuse the mixer either which is nice, just enough at just the right times..I liked the little bit of crunchy guitar thrown into the recipe too.
The only cheese out moment for me was when they started clapping for everyone to clap along with them but hey, you get that. Thank god they didnt do any of the.. dare I say it…terrible tracks off their new cd Eat Books. I say terrible because theres only 3 good tracks on the whole album in my opinion, and they’re the ones without vocals, so phew, no bad vocal tracks. Overall, great DJs, nice tunes, wikked lil buildups that werent overly done.
I cant help but think a Room full of crazy intoxicated kids is a great mixture for success regardless of who and what is being played.
