Fuzzy Breaks Vs Ambar @ Ambar, Perth 21/1/06

The symptoms were subsiding… the sweating was less profuse, the shakes had just about stopped and I could almost think straight. After 3 weeks cold turkey, I was finally heading to Ambar again for a much needed breakbeat fix. And with arguably the biggest brand name in Australian breaks sending their newest pin up boy over, I was expecting some class “A” quality shit!... and it seemed I was not the only one. Arriving about 11.30 I was greeted with a line that turned the corner and continued down Murray Street.

Having safely negotiated the wait and descended the stairs to the all so familiar surrounds, it was straight to the dance floor where Skelly was in control. With a mixture of the old (Adam Freeland’s seminal remix of “Smell’s like teen spirit”) and the new (Deekline and Wizards “Why don’t you”) the population on the dance floor was constantly increasing and satisfied.

But as 1am approached, if the time away had raised any doubts over who exactly may be Ambars favourite son, the man himself Micah stepped up to the decks and from the first track firmly re-established himself with the set of the night. With a dance floor filling set of fast paced techy breaks goodness, including Plump Dj’s “Pressure”, and Micah clearing enjoying himself behind the decks, Ambar was clearly open for business.

2 am came and along with it Sydney sider James Taylor. Slowing things down a bit at the very beginning of his set the pace soon began to roll along again with “Girls” by Prodigy and “2 freaks” by Rennie Pilgrim and B.L.I.M rollicking along. The variety was the key to Taylors set however with a number of unexpected inclusions (“Killing in the name of” and a Vanilla Ice acapella to name but a couple) keeping the large crowd glued to the dance floor for the sets entirety.

Charged with bringing up the rear of the night was Wish and clearly loving the hardness a 4 am set involves the night was driven home in more than capable hands.

Leaving weary but satisfied after the much needed injection I was secure in the knowledge that when it comes to homegrown breaks some of the best talent is right I our own backyard, quite often sandwiched around the nights headliner, and that Fuzzy is definitely a name you can trust. I can’t wait till the next time these heavyweights bump heads.
