Walking past the queue of chattering kandi kids, you realise that after all the hype and excitement the night has finally arrived. A painless entry leads you backstage, past the internationals’ dressing rooms and, after several wrong turns, you are suddenly in the main room. The huge neon lights behind the DJ booth spelling out Prophecy leave you in no doubt of your location.
The first thing on my agenda was, as always, to find my mates, the ITMRC, who were my source of motivation to attend the event. Then, after the obligatory flurry of hugs and photographs, it was time to focus on the music. The highlight of the evening was of course the Raver Baby Crew – Breeze, Styles, Hixxy, Recon, MC Storm and MC Whizzkid. They played a brilliant set, with fans even treated to Recon singing ‘Right Here, Right Now’. In fact, singing seemed to be the flavour of the night with the crowd happily belting out tracks like ‘Save Me’ and ‘Slide Away’. Set times in the main room were changed to the disappointment of many. The Raver Baby Crew did not play individual sets as promised, presumably because they were exhausted from their Melbourne gig the night before. This meant, however, that Unknown got moved into the main room. If you were there to witness his incredible scratching skills you should agree that this change was a welcome one.
Sideline trips to the Grand Foyer and Grand Ballroom provided much needed breaks from the happy hard. It also meant seeing popular Sydney DJs like Yoshi, Nik Fish and Amber Savage. Given that lineup, you can guess the music policy was hardstyle and hard trance, and the crowd readily partied to tracks like ‘Sky High’ and ‘The Second Trip’. Matrix coaxed the throng back to their feet with his closing set in the main room. His abilities behind the decks are fantastic. Couple this with noteworthy track selection – ‘Das Boot 2003’, ‘Emergency Call’, and ‘Silver Machine’ – and you have yourself an excellent finale. To top it off, the night ended with ‘Adagio For Strings’ which invoked much hugging and waving of arms. A word on production which, I am happy to divulge, was top notch. In keeping with the Ultraviolet theme, punters could experience UV lighting in the Echild room. The lights/lasers in the main room were copied on the style seen at the Q-Base parties like Qlimax. It was the best setup I have seen in Sydney, and hopefully will set the benchmark for future Powerhouse parties.
Sadly, all parties must end and the crowd is vigorously pushed into the punishing morning sun by security. The finest parties however, like Prophecy, leave you with fond memories and the realisation that the next event is just around the corner.
