A fresh night hits the Friday night timeslot in one of the most well known venues in Perth. 1AM is a new gig that starts at just that – 1AM! Held at the Platinum Bar of Metropolis Northbridge the new monthly night has a unique approach in that it is not specifically geared at one genre of music. Its not for the chin strokers to monitor the turntables nor is it a place to try and look trendy – the whole emphasis of this night was to let your hair down after a week of work or uni and party. The concept of the night is to cross the boundaries of Hip Hop, Breaks, Drum and Bass and House and fuse the night together to create one kickin party!

I arrived at the venue an hour early to soak up the atomosphere, staff were furiously wandering around preparing the bar while the organisers for the night were putting on the finishing touches to the venue. A small crowd arrived early too to assist and to start the night with an early drink and some idle chatter. MC Mortal Flow was on the mike about to introduce the first act of the night.

By 1am the venue was nicely filled up eager to see Dj Eve make her debut on the wheels of steel, having only been mixing for a couple of months, it was clear that a lot of people were out to support her first proper gig in a club. After some initial nerves on her first couple of mixes she then settle down and got into a nice rhythm continuing to rock the party early starting with some funky house tracks, some electro tracks before finishing off with some party funk breaks tunes, including the Stanton Warriors remix of Coburns “We Interupt this program” all throughout the set she had a nice dance floor going and perfectly warmed the crowd up for the night to follow.

The bar was one of the most popular places throughout the night with initially one person selling about 50 people at once – soon being joined by a second staff member. The drinks flowed and the party was picking up as Pete from the Signal Drivers stepped up to the decks to an amped dance floor. Playing a party fuelled breaks set, Pete kept the night chugging along at a nice pace with Stanton Warriors “Hope Time”, Metrics remix of Odissi’s “Captivate” before finishing off with one of his own compositions (and his best to date) “Liquid Bang” which did just that – the dance floor erupting from a wicked set from one of Perth’s best breaks dj’s, Scratching and cutting his way through an energetic set. Philly was up next and had a by now well and truly up for it dance floor, Philly brought things back abit with a funk fuelled set that kept the party going. By now the dance floor was packed and so was the outside balcony with people meandering and chatting about the week from before as well as people going off inside to the tunes being provided – it was like one big house party!

Jon Ngu aka Dj Fine China and Nick aka MC Mortal flow closed out the night and boy did these boys deliver. Ngu played a deeper darker set that what he usually does playing some classic breaks tracks including “Shadow Box” by Elite Force and the Rogue Element mix of Stanton Warriors “Hope Time”, the dance floor was well and truly bouncing along with every drop and China showed he has the skills to pay the bills with scratching and cutting of tracks with ease. Mortal Flow kept the rhymes and party flowing coming in and out of Ngu’s mixes without ever going over the top. The pair had the platinum bar absolutely chockers with people still eager to kick on even at 6am! A fantastic debut to a new monthly night that centres on good music, good vibe and most importantly a good old fashion party.  Keep an eye on the whats on section in ITM for details on the next 1AM night!
