With many gigs in the near future brandishing the Ministry of Sound watermark, the
most emergent genre of the Australian scene was not to miss out. The mantle of
maintaining the Ministry brand with regard to breaks (oddly enough not Kid Kenobi this
time) fell on the shoulders of now Sydney resident Klaus “Heavyweight” Hill in
support of his recent mix cd: Maximum Bass 2, and big things were expected of the big
man.

Ably warming up the decks for the couple of hours before the main act was
Skelly. Despite this the dancefloor was looking almost as bare as mother
hubbards bone storage cupboards. A combination of the general Friday night lull and strong
competition from local breaks night Backbeat meant that the punters were not out in force
early. A varied set of the new (A funky remix of the Gossip track “Standing in the ay of
control”), the old (Plump Dj’s “Scram”) and the local (“Our break” by Poxy Music) had those
that were out incessantly foot tapping.

Klaus himself had noticed the lull in attendance early in the evening but by the time the
man himself took to the decks a little after 1.30 am this problem had been remediated
somewhat, and for those that turned out…what a treat. From the very first track the
maximum bass tour lived up to its name with heavy driving basslines I’m sure could have
given me a lift home if my car broke down. A technically flawless set of fresh new breaks
and a little fat electro kept the dance floor jumping until the chants of 1 more were silenced
with a little drum and bass.

At 4am the gloves were passed to the combination of Karlsav and Fine
Chyna
and the punches kept coming. Heavy, hard as nuts breaks were on the menu,
and needed if the night was going stay up there after the high that was Klaus, and in this
the boys delivered in spades. As the night closed the crowed thinned and one can only be
impressed that a city the size of Perth can ably support opposing gigs of the same genre.
