Well its been 6 years since Inthemix was founded and it only seems like yesterday
that I first logged onto the site to check out the happenings of dance music around
Australia and since then has arguably become the country’s most comprehensive dance
music resource. To celebrate, the inthemix is six tour hit recently voted  no.42 in the top
50 dj voted clubs around the world,  Ambar Nightclub, and boy did this party go off.
Inthemix top 50 dj/producer Basskleph was here to strut his live show again after a
bamboozling show last time he was here, and Breakbeat heavyweight, Dj Hyper was the
other half of the headlining contingent to showcase his soon to be release artist album.

I arrived at the club nice and early at around 10:15 to soak up the vibe and
immediately on entry you knew you were at an ITM party with banners lining the walls of
the club from end to end. There was a contingent of 4 promo peoples handing out free
minties and gum to the patrons as they entered the club which was a welcome breath of
fresh air (pun intended) for myself as I had a garlic clad dinner before hand. Pawel was
on warm-warming up duties and did so in fine style laying down a good mix of downbeat
tunes with some hip hop flavours mixed in between. The club was well and truly filling up
quickly and it was evident that the night was surely going to be a sellout with all pre-sale
tickets gone and only a limited number of tickets available to go around on the door.

Ben Mac stepped up to a well and truly packed danefloor with only a small amount of
standing room left on the other side of the club. Bringing the tempo up some more, “The
Mac” took the crowd on a funk fuelled breaky affair with a spattering of house mixed in
between. Tracks that were played from memory were Stanton Warriors “Jerk It”, Soul of
Man “Shake Em’ Down”, Koma and Bones “Get Down” plus a good measure of bootlegs in
there as well. The crowd was well and truly warmed up for the first headline act of the
night Basskleph. Stu was in town towards the end of the last year to debut his Ableton
Live set to a modest but up for it crowd and he totally blew away all who witnessed it,
and “The Klephman” had big shoes to fill if he was to out do his last performance.
Wasting no time, Basskleph kicked off the set on the microphone introducing himself and
immediately started banging out a bassline on his midi controller in true live fashion.
Then looped a vocal stab that he made on his microphone before banging in a solid
breakbeat from his M-Audio Trigger Finger. Those that hadn’t seen him before had their
mouths open impressed with something that was a little different from the norm of Decks
and a mixer, while the others that did see his last show were crowded round the dj booth
to see exactly what was going on. Weaving in and out  a set of funky party breaks that
he had written, Stu kept the dance floor moving , creating breakdowns with good use of
effects and his microphone. One particular track got the dancefloor heaving so in true
“Rewind” style, Basskleph got on the mic saying “Oh  you like that one” and started it
again. Feelin Kinda Strange remix got the re-remix treatment again with BK using a
vocoder on the main vocals and playing around with the drum beat. The one hour set
came to a crescendo with a drum and bass track made from scratch. An impressive live
set, something different to what we Perth punters are used to that worked well on an
absolutely packed Ambar by now for the other headliner, Dj Hyper.

Head honcho of Kilowatt records, Guy “Hyper” Hatfield is a Perth favourite with some
storming performances in past events gone by. Making his Ambar debut an absolutely
packed Ambar Nightclub from the dancefloor to the pool tables roared with approval as
Hatfield started his set with a customised intro before dropping into one of the the main
singles off his album, the heavy guitar infused”We Control” . For the next hour Hyper
built his set nicely around guitar laden breaks mixed with some driving bassline beats.
The first half of the set was more of a builder with what was to follow in the second half.
Hypers remix of Doomsday was well recieved along with Dopamines remix of “Good Life”
that had the bassbins shaking. The biggest roar was probably saved for when he dropped
the Rage Against the Machine bootleg and General Midi’s storming remix of Way Out
West’s Apollo – one of the tracks that is featured on the Inthemix is Six Cd compilation by
both Basskleph and Hyper which can be picked up from all good record stores and on the
inthemix website. Hyper finished off with his remix of “Hyper Loves the Hives” which hit
white label around a year ago or so before winding down and finishing off with
Pendulums remix of Prodigy’s Voodoo people. Another quality Hyper set hits Perth – can’t
wait to hear what the album has to offer.

Micah had the enviable task of following on after such a storming set, and it was
clear everyone was up to party with a minimal amount of people leaving the club at the
conclusion of Hatfields set. Micah started with a bootleg of “Welcome to the Terrordome”
that got the set started nicely. Micah followed on with a different to the norm set for him
playing a set of classic tracks of around 4 or 5 years ago (some even more!) , you could
tell who all the long standing breaks heads were with many people saying “I haven’t
heard this tune for about 8 or 9 years”!.

What a great way to celebrate the 6th anniversary of our great website. Heres me
looking forward to covering the 10 year anniversary in 4 years time!

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
