‘Tonight, your mission if you choose to accept it is to make your way into the city in freezing temperatures, stealthily negotiate your way past the bouncers and door girl and follow the stairs down into Canberra’s most dangerously enjoyable nightspot, Academy and report back on what you see…...it is…Mission Impossibles’

Contrary to popular belief, the three piece act from Sydney are not Thetan Robots sent by Tom Cruise to promote the release of his new movie, in fact DJ Impact, Andrew and Forey are a trio that have been rocking the harbour city for the last few years with their infectious and somewhat unpredictably insane (dare I say it) ‘Mashup’ style.

The Impossibles are currently residents at Sydney’s most successful Breaks night on Friday’s at the Chinese Laundry, having more Break Inn’s under their belt than the entire G Wing of Long Bay Jail.

Being their first gig in the nation’s capital, the night started off a little slowly with only a handful of eager punters arriving early to bathe in the Chris Fraser experience. Chris warmed up with tunes like Phunk-a-delic ‘Rockin’and Tiga ‘Far from home’ and one of my favourite current soundbombs by Gaelle, aurally stretching the muscles of the gathering masses in preparation for what was to come. ‘Chris Fraser Vs Big Pig’ may sound like a WCW wrestling match but it is in fact this combination that has resulted in a rework of the 80’s classic ‘Breakaway’, which closed off the opening set like a weapon of mass destruction that had George Bush’s troops lasing targets in the candy bar and Hans Brick asking for a door list.

With two guys doing the Ableton live thing and an MC at their disposal, the Impossibles were always going to put on an interesting show but I had no idea that it was going to be as crazy as a Gnarls Barkely download or else I would have worn a big yellow stackhat to protect me from the unstoppable musical onslaught that was to follow. A pinch of Tiga here, a dash of Underworld there, stir in every tune you love to hear after a few Jaeger Bombs and there you have the recipe for the Impossibles. People came from everywhere, what was a generally average crowd almost doubled in the next half an hour, almost filling the club. The atmosphere was awesome, Acapella’s and samples were flying around with reckless abandon, hands never left the air and during the whole set of around 3 hours I don’t remember leaving the stage.

Everything you think you know takes on a different sound with these guys, they manipulate and re-edit on the fly to re-build such current smashes as ‘Buy Now – For Sale’ and ‘Washing Up’ into an even more danceable experience, kinda like ‘Pimp my Tune’ without the corn rolled host.

One of the most important elements of having a successful dance music enterprise is having a good MC and Forey tore the place apart with his energy and fluent rhymes that complemented the experience and really kept the audience pumped up for the entire duration.

I noticed in the crowd a large Sydney contingent who kept rocking out the whole night in ‘Impossibles’ T-shirts, love your work guys and WHERE’S MINE?? I am converted.
