Talk about a cruisy Sunday afternoon, have Birdee Num Nums got the setting all sussed out or what? An outside patio area with couches, teepee pergolas, pool tables and even an actual pool! But the best thing about the afternoon is the outdoor live set. Yes, the Sunday Roast has just passed again and it’s the first time I have had the pleasure of turning up to the event.
First up on the floor is the funky Nat Monaghan, perfect for my chilled out state of mind that gets my feet bouncing early on. As the afternoon progresses and Nat sexed up the beats, more people started filling the outside courtyard. At this point, I actually thought about throwing myself in the pool, the weather was still quite warm and the novelty of it being there had obviously not worn off yet, but, I decided against it for a number of reasons (including the one where I’d be walking around wet for the rest of the night).
As I settled onto the couch I felt the chill starting to set in when Baax took the stage with a faster, upbeat set. Still daylight, everyone seemed to be sinking into the cruisy atmosphere comfortably.
Adam Wade hit the stage with the smell of food in the air, the afternoon just wouldn’t be the same without putting on an actual roast. So, they came up with the goods, cooking up, well….um…sausages (I’m sure they’re roasted in some form) just in time to warm our bellies and soak up the beer to make sure people like me don’t end up in the pool.
As we approached the end of the afternoon, Valli Lee came to see the day into night with a more reflective approach at the beginning, and funking it up in the last half which followed with people filling the courtyard. I even had to make room for people on the couch (and yes I was still on the couch).
As the lighting and heaters come out to accommodate the dark and cooler weather, Mark Briais got my feet tapping uncontrollably with various grooves attracting both mine & other’s attention. Slowly the crowd appeared to be getting more and more into party mode – was it the cruisey Sunday atmosphere? The wide array of local talent on offer? A build up to the soccer match being played later that night? Or possibly the effect of those infamously cheap vodka-redbulls on offer? I would like to think that it was a combination of all of the above ;).
After that, Ian Nearhos started his set within the main room of Birdees with rolling bass lines that certainly got heads moving towards the warmer confides of inside and no doubt helped keep the sound within that 80 decibel or so rule we all love to hate.
By the time Habebe, Aniki, Cosmo Cater and SyFi played, you could see that the Sunday afternoon had transformed into the party only Birdee Nums Nums could get away with on a Sunday night. One could only wish that the next ‘roast’ wasn’t almost a month away, but alas like others I will have to put a permanent circle in my calendar and count down the weeks until the next one. There is no doubt in my mind that as the word begins to spread around town, it wont take long for the ‘Sunday Roast’ to become somewhat of a Brisbane ‘institution’ in the near future.
