Walking into this event I definitely did not know what to expect as I have very little knowledge of grime and dubstep. Being a listener who gets down to anything that has a broken beat, I have always been somewhat drawn towards garage, breaks, hip hop, d&b, etc. So as soon as I found out about this event happening down at Ambar I was more than slightly intrigued. I searched the forums for a little bit of information on what this dubstep genre was all about, but alas found very little. They say curiosity killed the cat – well this cool feline was just about to walk in the path of a convoy of semi trailers. BANG ……then it hit me.

Bouncy, bouncy beats, broken in the most out there way. For the uninitiated – think ragga dub crossed with garage crossed with breaks – all mish mashed up together to leave you with a stew of bouncy, bangin’ beats that everyone seemed to gobble up like gumbo. Apart from one “interesting” punter informing me that at these kinds of events the DJ needs to be more flowing and continuous with their mixing, everyone was having an awesome time.

I am not sure how many people in the club knew what they were in for when they first walked into the dugout. Judging by the satisfied look on everyone’s faces as they were leaving, I would say their expectations were more than met. The MCing was in a very good balance with the tunes. The music was quite minimal with a nice sprinkling of MCing for flavour. My compliments to the chef.

Quiet Storm served up a very satisfying entrée of simple bouncy delights to warm up the palettes of the crowd. As the palette matured he started dropping some of the dirtiest up-jump-the-boogie beats to get the dance floor pumping. Personally, I mainly remember standing next to the decks bobbing up and down to the grimey beats. I was in some kind of a subconscious trance-like bounce – I couldn’t stop.

Everyone was gobbling up this new style in town like a pack of wolves at their last meal. The tunes progressively kept building up and dropping out to the delight of the crowd. The more they would build up, the more the crowd would get amped in anticipation for the next drop in and then, boom. To the DJs that followed on from Quiet Storm: bravo. Big bad breaks to bring the Ambar faithful back to life for one more massive crank before home time.

In my opinion an appetite has been created with a number of brand new fans to this emerging genre in Perth. A perfect start to an awesome long weekend and the start of a trail of wreckage I left over the 3 days… To the promoters, congratulations on introducing an eager Perth scene to some new music. Keep up the good work! You’ll never, never know until you start the show.
