Ibiza makes it to Brisbane for one night. For those who aren’t in the know Pacha is synonymous with Ibiza. If you watch any Travel show Pacha will surely be mentioned in subsequent sentences. Not only is Pacha possibly the world’s biggest night club franchise (with clubs through out Europe, New York, and Argentina), its branding stretches across a hotel, restaurant, clothing label, music label and online music store.

The growth spurt and market diversification did not happen over night, Pacha opened in 1972. In these humble beginnings it only housed two dance floors, a restaurant, garden and terrace. As Ibiza grew and gained notoriety so to did Pacha. Pacha made monstrous additions and catered for the onslaught of tourists in the 80s, and 90s.

Adding to the Monumentuous franchise were arguably the most masterful House DJs the world has to offer. For those who attended Pacha at Family on Saturday night. It was night of aural delight and visual splendor. Carl Kennedy, Sarah Main, Serge Santiago and Benny Benassi were the four House Masters exported for this tour, as well as locals T-Funk (mrTimothy) with Katie Underwood and all your favorite residents.

First up the venue – our own little bit of Ibiza. The Family never disappoints and was perfect to house this little slice of Ibiza, but even our very own illustrious wonder was busting at the seams. The Staff handled the large turnout well; each member I had the pleasure to speak with displayed a friendly attitude despite the obvious signs of stress from servicing such a large crowd.

Lighting in the Family was at its spectacular best. With strategically positioned projections, house lights and mood lighting in the upper levels.

Now on to the wondrous visiting DJs – firstly to our local talent. I arrived just in time to catch T-funk and the dance floor was already on fire, heating up with each passing minute. He was dropping a Gnarles Barkley ‘Crazy’ remix and the crowd never looked back. Katie Underwood appeared roughly half way through the set, to add her set of lungs into the mix; she almost made me forgive the dreadful ‘Popstar’ series – well, almost.

Sarah Main proved that she is not only one of the best DJs of the fairer sex, but possibly one of the best House DJs, period. Sarah commands the main room at Pacha in Ibiza. That’s right the biggest dance floor in the largest club in possibly the grandest party city in the world! Comparatively if I could barely move during T-funk’s set, I definitely felt like a sardine in a can with the urge to bust out, during Sarah’s set.

Meandering through the Family was no easy task, stairways and hallways were packed. It gave me a chance to scope the crowd. All your usual party suspects were in attendance, with a few obvious house music part timers, and wall dwellers. I did meet up with a few acquaintances from the hip hop communities I dwell in. Proving that Pacha’s popularity collectively spans various genres. Speaking with a few of the other patrons some traveled from as far as Coffs Harbor to take in the wonder. My only irritation – to patrons out there do not stop and congregate in obvious pathways.

I made quick stop in the Uncle Lounge to take in the tunes of Carl Kennedy. I don’t know too much about Mr Kennedy. If Sarah Main is the General commanding the dance scene of the world’s largest party city, then Carl Kennedy would surely have to be the Colonel commanding Pacha in the world’s largest city – New York. His set had people on their feet, but the Uncle was still a nice place to take a well deserved rest and take in Carl Kennedy’s incredibly Funky set.

Serge Santiago’s background was illustrated well through Chico Brisbane’s summary at this well heralded website. Taking the time to read through the incredible essay. I took it upon myself to take note of the Chicago House King’s unique style of House – known as Italo Disco. Not being able to pin point him down to any one House style I just switched off and danced. Again the dance floor was jam-packed and absolutely bananas.

Lastly the man of the moment Benny Benassi, who is most notably known for his work on the Ministry of sound albums, and coming to us from the UK’s Pacha. Despite only gaining notoriety in recent years in my opinion Benny is one of the greatest house DJs and producers around. Given that most in attendance came to witness Benny at work there was only jumping room on the dance floor. Although given the lateness of the set it did clear out early. Benny being a frequenter to our shores may have meant that many had seen him before and just wanted to call it a night.

Looking at the words, in this here review. Illustrious, wonder, monumentuous, splendor, delight – not to mention the DJs, King, General, Colonel, Greatest, Best. Add this all into one night (or one nightclub) and you have one of the best house sets this year.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
