The Colonial Hotel always puts a new spin on layout, you can be upstairs in the front room, in the back bar and dance floor, in the large open frontage or a combination of any and all. On this particular date, a psy-night was running upstairs and for Teebee and the Black Sun Empire (BSE), all guests were packed into the main dance floor and bar area, which meets the corner of King street and has dark, high almost gothic ceilings, perfect for a musical onslaught.
First look around the place: a Saban and Force 2000 drum kit next to the DJ console, a standard setup of Technics 1200’s and Pioneer CD-J’s fronting the crowd, and an MC bouncing around, with a bright yellow T-Shirt proclaiming “Music is the future”.
TeeBee was supposed to start up at 2 am but held out till past 2:30, then made it behind the decks with ‘Money Shot’ written on his chest, and most in the place got ready for some serious screaming.
It was a different intensity to what I was expecting, a little mellow in a very relative ‘compared to Pendulum craziness’ way. With that said, Teebee put out a set of consistent and technical sound. Soft bass lines, just above a true rumble in your guts, with hard, kicking mid-sections. It was mixed well and entertained the hell out of the crowd.
With Black Sun Empire following him up and hitting their start time of 4 am which meant we only got an hour and a half of Teebee, things were kicked up slightly and it seemed the entire place consolidated in their desire to go a little more nuts, and then did quite successfully. The sound of BSE seemed very similar to Teebee, well mixed and less driving then I expected.
In association to all this, the usual DnB fanatic style of jumping, screaming and generally having an awesome time went down through the crowd, and both Teebee and BSE looked like they were having a lot of fun dishing it out to the punters.
Teebee and Black Sun Empire? Great value!
The Colonial hotel? Great venue!
Supporting acts for the night? Technically proficient and heaps of fun.
All in all a good event, congratulations to the Elementz & Fractured crews for once again making quality acts, artists and productions a reality.
