This was to be my first time at Tank, and I was impressed before I even got through the door. There’s something about wandering through alleyways at midnight to get to a nightclub that makes you feel exclusive, it’s as if you’re part of the chosen few that know it’s there.

The main room downstairs opened at midnight, so the crowd was building up slowly. Being a Friday night it was significantly emptier than you’d expect on a Saturday, with a 4 minutes hiatus around about the 1.30am mark, after which the crowd dispersed again. It was mostly under 30s, with a welcome lack of teeny-boppers.

Upstairs it’s all very modern as expected, with plenty of couches and hot on-the-ball bartenders, so you can take in the music whilst chilling and relaxing with a drink. The DJs on the night included Alex Taylor, Mike McGrath, Tazman and Yogi, playing a self-described mix of “funkychunkysexyhouse”.

The music was awesome with the DJs truly knowing how to work a crowd. It was music to dance to, but also music you could easily chill to, so all the ingredients were present for a great night. It was well worth the $15 cover charge. The line started to build up after about 12.30am, so if you’re not a fan of waiting in the cold I’d suggest getting there a bit earlier, and who knows, you may even snag a lounge.

Clean and Serene brought together a good and fun crowd, who all danced it up to wicked music with less posers than one might expect. Definitely a welcome change from one too many nights spent in the Cross. It’s an event that’s definitely well worth the visit.
