Bunbury has always seemed to have missed out on quality DJ’s in recent years. For the most part, the music offered by most Bunbury venues (in the past) has been generic Top 40 cheese at best, with punters having to do the two hour run to Perth for a much needed groove to their favourite genres of dance music. This year has seen a change for the better, however, with the ‘Fusion’ monthly club night combining Perth’s top DJs in breaks, drum and bass, electro and other genres with solid support from the locals. Presented by Balcony Records, past Fusion nights have showcased respected Perth lads Philly and Ben Mac among others. Saturday night’s Fusion saw Perth breaks guns The Nyquist Freaks and drum and bass duo Tymed Conspiracy head south to join local Bunbury DJs in putting on some quality beats for Bunbury’s Saturday night crowds.

It was good to see quite a few people already down there when I got to the pub at around 10.30pm. The venue was set up with a main room and another slightly smaller room of to the side, which had more laidback house and even some trance beats on display. In the main room, Scollop was progressing through a smoothly mixed set of drum and bass, with some carefully selected tracks that were both getting a great vibe going as well as leaving some room to manoeuvre for the acts to follow. The clock had just gone past midnight when Tymed Conspiracy, aka Brett B and Princi, stepped up. Originally from Bunbury, both lads now reside in Perth where they’ve built a solid reputation for some quality production as well as some top notch DJ sets. Saturday night was no exception, with the Tymed boys kicking off with a fiery track of their own called ‘Intospect’. They then flew through a banging set with a great reception from the dance floor. Another track of theirs that was a highlight for me was Narky Tart, a grinding tech funk number that made you want to lift that little bit more on the dance floor.

After a brief but tight set by Hoppy, the Nyquist Freaks were into it. I had been looking forward to seeing these guys play for a while now, after hearing the buzz around Perth that they had been playing some great shows, including a much talked about support for the Stanton Warriors. The Nyquist Freaks did not disappoint, with some jacking breaks layered well with some flawless mixing by Dave Sheehan and Graeme Bruce, and some tight cuts and scratching by Budda Dave. Tracks highlights included the Deekline and Wizard track “Gold Digger”, as well as the recent Plump DJ’s remix of Fatboy Slims’ “Everybody Needs a 303”. It was a fantastic set, and I definitely look forward to catching these guys play again!

The night was closed out with Bhuda and Hoppy going back to back until close. Everyone had a fun night, and Bunbury most definitely appreciated the quality music on display!

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
