Balcony Records’ Fusion club nights now have a new home at Odessey Nightclub. The set up at Odessey is ideally suited for such shows, although it’s a very large roomy venue that needs a lot people for it to fill it up. Regardless, Saturday night saw UK Breaks pair 30Hz and Boabinga (aka the Bodysnatchers) come south for the evening after playing a packed Backbeat at Geisha the night before.
Hoppy set the tone for the evening first up with a solid breaks set. Its always difficult playing early to a small crowd, but someone’s gotta do it and he flew through a set of broken beat with a harder edge. As Drum n Bass DJ Scollop stepped up around 10.30pm, slowly but surely crew started filtering in from the wet and windy night outside. Scollop was his usual smooth self, cracking through a well layered set with a D n B remix of ‘Love Story’ definitely being a highlight. Then it was back to breaks with Chris, as he played some driving breaks tracks through to about 1am.
Then it was time for the Bodysnatchers to hit the decks. After a customized hip hop paced intro, the guys jumped straight into some grinding, bass heavy electro breaks. The overall set was pretty damn impressive – the mixing was technically precise and very quick, while there was continual changing between electro breaks and more tech funk orientated tracks. This kept everything fresh, and highlighted that the extensive experience these guys have behind the decks. Although I had to leave a little early, I definitely enjoyed catching these guys play.
Although the club wasn’t packed, everyone there definitely appreciated and enjoyed some quality breaks from both the Bodysnatchers and the supporting DJ’s. Yet another step in right direction for some quality music in Bunbury’s nightlife!
