Backbeat, Perths longest running breaks night and the cornerstone of it’s tear out scene hosted on Friday 9th Aug The Bodysnatchers, A UK duo comprised of 30hz and Baobinga. Both are talented and unique artists in their own right but together they create fast paced and inventive tunes perfectly suited to the enthusiastic dancefloor dwellers that pack Geisha every 5 weeks for some proper tear out action so I was very excited at the prospect of seeing them alongside the cream of our local talent.
Czar opened up the night to a half full dance floor and plenty of enthused punters, with the club filling up faster than usual and a line of more than a few eager guys and girls outside in the rain he delivered a sharp set packed with rocky tunes and clean cuts. Dopamines “Hold you” got a warm welcome and drew a noticeable number of people to the floor. The dirty bassline of Josh Winks “Freak” ground it’s way over the crowd and by the time The Stanton Warriors “Shake it up” was slid into the closing moments of his set Czar had everyones rapt attention and probably a secure place in the backbeat rotation.
The Beatslappaz are two boys who know how to work a crowd, having been residents for just over 12 months now they have developed nicely as a team with a knack for reading the crowd and hitting their mark. I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer funk of some of the tunes, Krafty Kuts and Tim Deluxes – Bass Phenomenom started the stream of slick sounds including the likes of Liz Melody with High 8 – “Rock my world” and the Rouge Elements stompin remix of Rob Le Pitchers “Twisters”. A lovely ditty called “touch your toes” (Deekline and The Wizard) had people hollering their approval before a slamming little track called “Rogan Josh” (Beatslappaz original) closed out a very excellent set.
The Bodysnatchers pretty much made my year with this set, possibly the most enjoyable one I’ve heard all year, they rocked out from start to finish, I was astonished when they wrapped up…time flies when you’re having fun and all that jazz. I very nearly lost my shit when they opened with DMX – Come Thru (feat Busta Rhymes) the transition from the sound of the slappaz to the snatchers was fantastic like it was just different take on the same theme and not a whole new show.
“Rip it up” – a scorching tune of their own making got an outing as did their official remix to Ferry Corsten – Junk (Punk – with Guru on vocals) coming out on Positiva soonish and literally tearing the roof off…okay ok that did not actually happen but you can imagine right?
The Snatchers (it’s ok that I call them that right?) seem to have found a very happy place for us to rest our ears between tear out breaks and ass shaking funk, personally I hope they come back soon.
Gully wrapped the night with a signature set of solid and thumping tunes, the pace of 30hz and Baobingas time at the decks was blistering and definitely a hard one to follow but the floor remained full till lights up and then sadly once again, it was time for me to go home.
Backbeat continues it’s quest to bring the noise, luring quality breakbeat artists to our shores on a regular basis, I look forward to the next installment on Sep 8th – be there.
