When the words Trance and Psy are spouted in the promotion of an event, one would usually conjure up thoughts of glow sticks, gators, hippies, bush doofs and massage trains, however at it was certainly time to Contort Your Thought about all things trance and psy with the Leederville Hotel yet again showing their support for smaller promoters trying to do something different and allowing their upstairs area to be used for an event like this. Friendly bouncers, happy staff bouncing along and quick bar service all combined to make this an excellent, hassle free night out!

Arriving to be greeted by Psyche, who was in obvious good spirits despite the drama that occurred just a few short weeks ago at an event he organised elsewhere, handling the door duties for the night, Akira behind the decks, playing to the small but enthusiastic early crowd and two green lasers cutting through the room and some anime on the big screen, there was hardly a glow stick in sight.

*Akira*’s set, which was interrupted only by his frequent trips to the smoke machine to enhance the use of the laser, was flawless. With a varied track selection that included Sensient – Mohedral, Tristan – Small Paper Squares, Hikimori – Black Ops, Bodishattva – Unreleased, Nomad – Birth of Stars and trance legends Talamasca’s Genetic Monster there was not one chin being rubbed in the venue.

Next up was up and comer Lysergic who definitely got off to a very noticeable bumpy start which was explained as being due to an unfamiliar mixing setup which can put any up and comer off when they are used to a certain style of setup and Lysergic powered on for the first fifteen minutes of his set with his mixing slowly but surely getting tighter. However with the reactions on the faces on the face of the crowd one expected that the next hour was going to be a very long one both in the mind of the crowd with the troubled mixing and of course to Lysergic whom was having some trouble grasping the setup used.

*Lysergic*’s previously flawless skills shown behind the decks at other events eventually won over the unfamiliar setup with the last forty minutes of his set coming together quite nicely with tracks such as Snap Crackle Pop’s Where is Pop?, Psysex – Altered States (x-noize remix) and Miraculix’s Stop Them, the crowd, which had grown steadily during his set, responded by filling the raised dance floor with whistles and cheers going up as each new track was brought in.

With the crowd now filling out the room quite solidly from the diehard psy crew through to the occasional appreciator the number of upturned collars started to grow with the curiosity of the event getting the better of the usually commercialised downstairs punters, Tafkas stepped up in place of Psyche and upped the tempo and played a solid set of floor stomping tunes including Penta – Esta Noche, Sun Control Species – Dark Origins and Artifakt’s Doom Doom Doom which was the right balance of tough tunes to dance floor friendly tunes that was needed to keep the dance floor packed right up until the 12.30am venue close.

If you’re up for something new and exciting but the prospect of heading out bush is daunting, keep an eye out for their next event in the near future and you too will have your thoughts about trance and psy well and truly contorted.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
