To select someone of a crowd who you would define a hip hop, chances are picking a white Jewish women out that crowd wouldn’t be your first choice; in fact I would think it would be toward the end of anyone’s list when selecting someone who is the epitamy of hip hop right… You’d be wrong so very wrong, Princess Superstar has been burning up hip hop underground for the better part of a decade now. With even some mild commercial success with her hit ‘Bad Babysitter’, all this despite her gender, religious alignment, and pigment of her skin. Truth be told behind this hip hop superstar is a very talented musician, adding punk/indie rock, house, and electro to her music stylings.
On to her show Princess Superstar (PS) showed of her musicianship and showmanship during her performance, MCing and DJing throughout. Her song selection as a DJ swapped between old school electro/breaks, to old school hip hop, into newer selections for each respective genre. She even snuck in a few of her own tracks including her latest single ‘Perfect’. After seeing her with her punk band a few years ago I have seen her more amped as an MC. Still it’s great to see a performer display all of their skills; the smaller space may not have helped either.
Not to say the Moonbar isn’t an adequate venue, it’s perfect for smaller acts such as this. Beside the staff at the Empire are always friendly and always seem to get into the spirit of the performer. The crowd likewise got into the spirit, and after a few hard house, hard NRG gigs in row it felt good to slow down. In fact I felt slightly more relaxed, at this gig than at the previous ones I attended.
Having Princess Superstar open up the Empire for this year’s Valley Fiesta would have really helped to get things going. I know for the crowd that packed the Moonbar that it would have made their night, if not the Fiesta for them.
