Finally making the association between the venues’ address and what once was the old strip club Sante Fe Gold, I climb the stairs with trepidation. The club is a meandering maze of dimly-lit rooms with low ceilings and possesses an atmosphere not unlike a party in some connected persons’ home.
Wunderkind Petter Nordkvist takes to the decks and there is an immediate shift in tone. His mastery invades you on a visceral level; shifting from one foot to the other becomes involuntary.
The young Swedish sensations’ tracks have found their way into some illustrious record boxes – Laurent Garnier and Hacker included. His belter “These Days” was recently revived and remixed for Sasha’s “Involver” compilation.
Connoisseur of left of centre sounds James Holden has noticed this auspicious Djs’ ability to craft a groove – it’s impossible to ignore. Several of his cuts have been released on Holdens’ Border Community label which hosts nights at Turnmills in London; Petter graces the decks via a quarterly residency and one can readily hear why.
His quirky, evocative soundscape packs the dancefloor. Elated hands crowd the air- cheers of appreciation punctuate this melodic, funky electro house. The assembly of worshippers are entranced.
Petters’ pensive persona is alluring. He boogies instinctively, effortlessly incorporating some of his own material – “Freak”, “Some Polyphony”, and “Love. Is that enough?”- into an all-too-fleeting set.
The punters can’t get enough though love him they do unquestionably. There’s a sense of worship as the vocal throng exudes enthusiasm. For the duration of his set, no dancing legs are resting.
More journey agent than DJ, this dude hovers reverently amidst the best of his genre. The gurners were definitely having dancefloor epiphanies amounting to prog rapture. Next time Petter weaves us his sonic texture, know who to prioritise. All hail Petter!
