With a line-up to surpass all other line-ups this weekend, featuring in the main courtyard D Ramirez and Marc Hughes of Ministry Of Sound in London, this day was a long time coming for many people.
I caught the train from Town Hall station over to North Sydney around 2.30pm and met a few guys who were Sounds on Sunday virgins. “Man, we can’t wait, this is going to be the party to end all parties,” commented Dean, a 22 year old from Sydney’s inner west. That was the vibe of everyone heading to Sounds today shared. Whether you were an SOS virgin, or an SOS slut, either way you were sure excited to be there!
Craig Obey was first up in the courtyard, and unfortunately played to an almost empty venue. It seemed a waste of his talent as he played such a fantastic set. Keep a look out for an up and coming interview with Craig in November on ITM following the release of his new album ‘Elektrik Force’. By the time Ben Morris came on the venue wasn’t looking so sad, with the crowd warming up and the first of the dancers started. Initially there were two, then five, then 50… now things were moving!
It didn’t take long, but soon the crowd was pumping and Goodwill stepped up to take on pole position. One of his first tracks got the first major crowd reaction of the day, with ‘Toop Toop’ by Cassius getting the punters really moving to the sounds of the French house legends. Halfway through his set Goodwill also decided to jump off stage and grab an unknown male for a short waltz. All because he was asked if he’d like a dance, of course. A new track to make special mention of is ‘She Bites’ by Poxymusic, played for the first time here at Sounds. Ensure you keep an ear out for it.
D Ramirez and Marc Hughes… what can be said about these two fine gentlemen of electro? It’s been a long time coming for those of us that had been here from the start of the day. With an introduction by Goodwill, and enough crowd appreciation to make even a grown man blush, these boys – in their respective sets – played some of the dirtiest, filthiest, downright passed-out-in-the-gutter-on-a-Sunday-morning, grimiest electro that this reporter has heard in a long time. And, like the rest of the crowd, I loved every beat of it!
These boys have got game when it comes to knowing what the crowd wants, and unfortunately for the DJs in the Chapel Bar and Cocktail Lounge, most of the crowd was experiencing this once in a blue moon opportunity to hear some of the best! Other DJs to make special mention of today were Hook N Sling and Toby Neal, who impressed the punters with their individual styles and mixing abilities. I, like many others, didn’t want this day to end, and with it being the first day of daylight savings it gave us a glimpse in one word of what Sounds on Sunday is going to be like this summer. Awesome.
