Drum and bass, breaks and hip hop on a boat? Could there be anything more whacky? Not likely. As we searched the docks for ‘our’ boat it became pretty evident which one it was. You can spot a drum and bass crew from a mile away! We waited to board the Victoria Star and the sun just began setting on the Melbourne ‘seas’…what a perfect beginning to a mad evening!

The night showcased an interesting and varied mix of music. Upstairs on the mighty Star were sets by Sean, Lex and Keir. On the lower decks were Kammo and Babblekin, and Obliveous and Direkt MC who played a rocking set. There was even some of this dub-step that I’ve been hearing so much about. Heads bobbed up and down just scraping the low ceilings of the boat and some new dance styles were introduced when the seas got a little bit choppy. MC Griff was particularly impressive. Fents and Fickus, who were responsible for organizing the night, both played some mad tunes.

The views of the city were simply superb, and although it was damn chilly out there, we still all enjoyed that fresh, salty air.

It all seemed to end rather quickly and before we knew it we were on the double decker ‘party bus’ to the secret location… Which ended up being Lounge on Swanston St. The after party was a disappointment – downstairs at Lounge didn’t seem to be the ideal location, but thankfully the real party, on the boat, was great, expertly run and hosted some fine tunes.

The crowd was friendly, the venue intimate and exceptionally special, and the music spot on. This was one of those special one-off parties that you felt privileged to be a part of and that you raved to all your friends about. And there wasn’t even one man overboard!

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
