Arriving at 4pm was a smart move today to see Sneaky Sound System performing live at Sounds on Sunday. By 5pm the cue for entry was right across the walkway bridge crossing the Pacific Highway, and it remained that way until around 7pm when the venue finally sold out. It seems that I wasn’t the only one keen for a peek at what this group could do live!
A friend of mine did mention though, that she though that maybe capacity was a bit stretched, as a lot of people don’t use the front courtyard, and most stay where the tunes are, out the back. A 4pm arrival ensured I didn’t miss any of Matt Roberts set, with his mix of funky, yet soulful house, he inspired the massive to get ‘Get Up On Their Feet’ when he went old school with Technotronic early on in his set. Matt, with his laidback, easygoing style and friendly personality, has created a lot of friends over the years, and as his T-shirt asks ‘Who the Masta?’, well I think we all know who that is!
Grabbing some Chinese for dinner earlier was also a smart move, because when Sneaky hit the stage I needed all my strength to witness the amazing performance of the group, consisting today of Black Angus DJing, MC Double D and vocalist Connie Mitchell, who performed all their hits from their latest album and then some. For those of you not familiar with Sneaky’s work (are you living under a rock?), their first release ‘Hip Hip Hooray’ kicked things off, and continued this year with ‘I Love It’, ‘Pictures’ & ‘Tease Me’, all of which are pushing this Australian group onto a whole new level.
You experience a feeling of awe, when a group you have heard played by so many DJs for so long actually performs one of their tracks live. It’s equally good when a singer holds up to how they sound on their album. When all the tweaks and adjustments made in a studio are taken out if you still sound good, you know you’ve ‘got it’. Connie is definitely one of those singers. If you were just walking past the Courtyard you would have probably mistakenly thought that the tracks were being played off vinyl, and not sung live..! Though you may have wondered why so many people had their hands up in the air all pointing in the same direction (look, it’s a bird, it’s a plane).
Checking out MC Losty and Elroy in the Chapel was also a highlight of the evening, with their banging set as Losty was spitting out lyrics like there was no tomorrow. I’m eagerly awaiting the next big installment of Sounds on Sunday. I love the sun, the fun, the ladies and the cold crisp Coronas on a hot day. Bring on the summer festivals and more Sunday afternoons at the Greenwood!
