Out of breath after running from the cab, I arrived at Chinese Laundry faced with a massive line. Luckily, I was able to avoid this as I’d popped in to the club earlier on to get my stamp, so I got in nice and quickly.

I arrived at just after 1am with my heart set on seeing King Unique. I had seen him previously at Smut a few weeks before where he played a set that I felt the crowd wasn’t really up for, but this time he was playing in the Cave – and to a very different crowd – so I was interested to see how it would go.

The reason Chinese Laundry is, in my opinion, Sydney’s best club is because of the quality of music that comes out of there. It’s also an awesome venue, but the biggest factor of course is the crowd. Everyone at Laundry leaves their ego at the door, which is so refreshing in a city where the exclusive image is forever trying to be promoted.

I shuffled through the masses towards the front. It was pretty packed but there was still room to breathe. Through the people I got a glance at King Unique, and he was right into it. You could tell he was enjoying himself, and the crowd was too, as the vibe in the place was one of excitement. It was awesome just to be a part of it all!

The music itself was amazing. He took the crowd down a rabbit hole of deep, dark, twisted electro and tech, and they were loving it. It was so satisfying to know that there is quality electronic music out there, it’s just hard to find at the moment. I feel like I’m asked to put my hands up for Detroit just about everywhere I go.

The highlight of the set was when he played King Unique’s head caving remix of the Style of Eye song “We Got You”. If you’re yet to hear this song do yourself a favour and get it ASAP, but be warned – this song is so dirty you may need a bath after hearing it! King Unique definitely took the crowd on a journey, and that doesn’t tend to happen much nowadays.

I left feeling dirty and like my head was caved in, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Tonight, the King reigned supreme at Chinese Laundry!
