Most weeks in Perth we find ourselves with a plethora of choices for entertainment, including many international artists. The fact that we almost always choose to attend Japan 4 at Ambar is testament to the strength of the local breaks scene here in WA. This Saturday night was to be no different, so we headed into Ambar knowing what was in store for us: Japan 4 well known among Perth’s dance scene as showcasing Perth’s finest in breaks. And this week’s episode did not disappoint.

We arrived just before twelve, in time to catch the end of Fdel’s set; chilled out funky tunes warming the crowd up to what was to be an awesome night packed full of immense mixing and spun out tunes.

Micah was next cab off the rank, fresh from his success at the Perth Dance Music Awards, he didn’t hesitate in prolonging the funky vibe, drawing in the crowd with his soulful tunes. Not as big a crowd as Micah is probably used to; the crowd arrived fashionably later than usual.

Next up was Ben Mac, stepping up to the decks to witness a pumping, heaving dance floor, waiting expectantly to embark upon an aural journey. Ben Mac was definitely the highlight of the night for me, having only seen him once or twice prior to this evening, I was not sure what to expect. Boy were we in for a treat – Ben Mac immediately took control of the crowd, reeling us in, then dropping us in the ensuing mayhem. We were definitely ‘feeling the base’, and after dropping Kid Kenobi’s ‘Feelin’ Kinda Strange,’ dizzying heights of ecstasy were reached by many of my fellow punters.

Nyquist Freaks followed and kept the tempo and emotion alive with their unique blend of industrial-electro breaks. It was hard to stop moving to these guys – their energy was incredibly infectious. The crowd started to thin a little as Marty McFly took to the decks for the home straight. Belting out tune after tune, the atmosphere only got better. Unfortunately, I was not up to the task of an all nighter, and succumbed to the ‘I’m tired’ thoughts ringing loudly through my head. Congratulations must go to the Japan 4 crew and to Ambar for putting on another outstanding night jam packed with awe inspiring
music.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!

Yep, I had a great night too. The Ambar never disappoints. Although I was slightly put off by the outrageous carry-on by the tall DJ in the red shirt late on (about 3:30-4am). Who was he? Tunes were good, I just thought he was acting like a bit of a knob.
