One of the things you can count on in when it comes to Sydney venues is that the Chinese Laundry, and its long running night Break Inn, always seem to consistently deliver some amazing acts for a very reasonable excellent price. This weekend just gone saw Kosheen delivery a two hour set in the main room alongside The Impossibles, Basskleph; with Shamozzle and Karton taking care of the Cave side room.
Kosheen are a relatively well known name in dance music due to a couple of quality releases that made it big, including Hide U and Catch, which have both sprouted a huge number of remixes covering most styles. Their lesser known production material is mainly drum and bass and they have been making a wave in the DnB scene over the last couple of years. Kosheen was a project born when Bristol drum & bass faces Markee Substance and Darren Decoder hooked up with singer Sian Evans after hearing her sing on a tune a friend had recorded.
After a fairly long week at work (well what week isnt?), we made our way to the Slip Inn to meet up with the crew and before long we were squeezing through the absolutely packed main room of the Laundry as the Impossibles were finishing up. The next mission and possibly one of the only negatives about this crazy venue is the bar line, which is jammed right into the corner between several rooms. Luckily the uber speedy bar staff soon satisfied our needs as the quality tunes rolled on.
Before long the lads from Kosheen took over at the decks and began an absolutely rocking dancefloor oriented set which lifted the vibe throughout the entire room to manic levels. Early on in the set the break beat tunes were nice and funky with some solid basslines and MCing over the top of it all. Plenty of electro influences in many of the remixes played throughout the set which including the squealchy bleaps of Gehts Noch, an electro remix of Infusion’s Girls Can Be Cruel and an crazy updated remix of their massive hit Hide U. Next up Basskleph took over to continue the battering of bass heavy electro sounds which was absolutely lapped up by the fairly wasted but jovial crowd. Meanwhile in the Cave side room we occasionally ventured off to check out the sounds which were also sweet all night long. It was also fun taking a break in the side chillout room where Family Guy episodes were playing on the plasma to the tune of the huge glitchy electro sounds in the background.
Overall, the long running Break Inn night continues to consistently deliver both quality acts and a night with fantastic atmosphere. Kosheen and Basskleph would no doubt have pleased fans of breaks and there were a stack of grimy dirty basslines and glitchy electro sounds to be heard throughout the night. The side room was a nice escape from the packed crowds of the main room for anyone who needed a break from it all and the Slip Inn upstairs has many areas to explore as well if one feels the need. I look forward to many more quality nights at Break Inn throughout the summer; make sure to check out their website for upcoming acts. See you at the next one!
