After taking a well deserved break from clubbing over the past little while I decided to break the draught and head out for a night of drinking, dancing and debauchery. Not much happened on the debauchery side of things though… Most likely because I was so busy drinking and dancing. But hey, I got to wake up on Sunday morning next to a beautiful hangover, we hung out all day and I even got her number so we can do it all again next week. So that was that, and what a jolly good night it was too.
A cool breeze blew across our faces as we walked down the bustling city streets, the moon shone bright and the stars flickered through our minds. All signs were pointing to a great night out, and as I entered the throng of the Chinese Laundry I knew I would be in for something special. I knew Kid Kenobi would be playing alongside MC Shureshock, and to be honest with my personal tastes currently falling where they do, I wasn’t overly enthused. But with the stars still twinkling in my eyes, I set out for an obligatory cruise around the club to see what was going on. And it was all going on.
As per old times I made my way with the crew to the beer garden to sink some… err… beer, catching up with my homies on the flip side of a big night whilst clowning some desperados already going heavy on the turps. Oh yeah, that’s how I was rollin that night. On fire. And so was the club. It was pumping like a street walker and bouncing like a chimpanzee trying to score bananas. The place was positively rammed already, and by the time 1am rolled around you couldn’t squeeze a foot through the door of Laundry without having to seriously consider a chiropractic session for Monday morning. Music in the Sandbar was being churned out by Impact from the Impossibles – laid back, funky, and a bit of fun. To be honest I wasn’t paying all that much attention at this point, but the music created the perfect soundtrack to as the night was unfolding. Matt Nugent followed suit with another set that definitely started to get the crowd rocking.
Always a fan of Synik, I decided I’d go for a trot down to the Cave to hear some of the slightly harder stuff that I generally get excited about down in the much-loved dungeon of the Chinese Laundry. He had the crowd under his thumb and was dancing them around like puppets. The place was wild and the music even better, and it stayed that way through Mark Murphy’s set and of course the timeslot of Miss Amber Savage. Whenever I ventured down there I was not disappointed and could not stop moving. While it certainly wasn’t as jam-packed (excuse the pun) as the Laundry, the quality of the music in the Cave was superb, as was the vibe. I spent the majority of my night in the Cave or upstairs watching my man Steve Lind put on a tight show. The vibe was contagious, and everyone who walked through the doors had caught the bug.
In the Laundry, when I actually managed to get in there without being crushed to death by all the punters going insane, a fantastic thumping intro set was being provided by Jeff Drake who had the place going nuts really early on. Not a man to shy away from playing it a bit more uplifting, he managed to hit the nail on the head on this particular night with a solid mix of house, electro and everything in between. Not really my sort of thing in general, but I couldn’t help but get my groove on for a little while.
As the Kid stepped up the place exploded, and I don’t know if they could have possibly crammed anyone else in. I wasn’t uncomfortable, but it wasn’t a stroll along the beachside either. The crowd loved everything these two were pulling out, and while it was obvious that Kid has certainly moved away from his breaks roots, playing primarily electro, I really enjoyed a lot of the tunes and it was clear that everyone was having an awesome time. If nothing else, you can count on these two to get people up and moving.
At some point I wandered up to check out Lindy, and I was, as always, inspired and shocked by his skill and quality track selection. That mash up of Timo Maas and whatever else it was, was most certainly on point. A fun, bouncy set with a solid groove and an up for it crowd. What else do you need?
Baby Gee took up after the boys down in the Laundry and I imagine kept the room going until close – but alas, 3am saw my departure having had a very rewarding evening indeed. Highlights were everything in the Cave, and Steve Lind upstairs. I walked out with the party bug and with the impressive lineups the Laundry is promising over the summer, I have no doubt I’ll be losing it again very soon. Merry Christmas, see you again on New Years Eve at the Chinese Laundry!
