Given that this man is an international act of considerable reputation, it was a pity to see technical difficulties push his set back, among other ‘on the night’ compromises. Only for the firmest believers was this one a night to remember.
Don’t get me wrong, when the set eventually started, it was full of gems. Obscure, down-tempo atmospherics mixed up with dirty rhymes, old school breaks and even a dash of drum and bass for good measure. Perfect really… it’s just that there was a vibe of frustration due to the tech setbacks that seemed to settle around the room and Krush had a hard time shaking it off. Even his body language was tight, though fortunately this didn’t affect his skills on the decks.
As I arrived, the DJ Shadow monster hit Midnight in a perfect world from Endtroducing was definitely pleasing those on the dance floor. It’s one thing to listen to Shadow in the lounge room, and completely another to get a taste of this track’s epic scope mixed along with some wound-up drum and bass.
This was quite obviously the peak of the set which then subsided, making way for some seriously floaty, suggested instrumentation featuring breathy female vocals….If I’m not mistaken the whole set was a mere 2 hours… not nearly enough for me. I can only imagine that with tech problems persisting, Krush deceided to bow down and give way to a local MC spitting in a souped up and aggressive style. The whole placed cleared within five minutes and it was only just passed 12.30am.
Despite the technical dramas, Krush did manage to pull off a solid (albeit short and sweet) set blending the harder elements of breaks and drum and bass with some expectedly beautiful, soft and sensual sounds.
