Sold out months in advance, hyped more than Warney’s nimble fingers – whether on or off the field – Fuzzy’s Shore Thing on Bondi Beach had better live up to its name…
The excitement was there from the very beginning as party-goers danced and criss-crossed their way out of the path of friendly dogs and their uniformed masters, located between the ID and ticket checks. But the hip-shaking definitely didn’t stop there. The Funktrust DJs enlisted the help of ‘The Rockafeller Skank’, and it was confirmed that the big tracks (as well as the revellers) were going to be out and about in abundance, if not slightly mashed up.
D. Ramizez’s mix of ‘Yeah Yeah’ pleased the crowd to no end, as they pranced and posed their way around what was a wondrous setting. The stage was located on the edge of the sandy shores of Bondi Beach, which meant that the patrons faced out toward the ocean as they welcomed in the new year, fireworks following suit. The sound system was also phenomenal.
It went from ‘Disko to Disko’ as the Funktrust boys pulled out the old and the new, with Daft Punk’s ‘Around the World’ smiling upon all those who listened. In between the music some other entertainment included amusement rides, slushies and a boy in blue crash-tackling a sprinting suspect, taking out a few unsuspecting by-standers at the same time. But I digress…
Illya and Toby Neal donned their Lamenex hats for the evening and smoothed things along with Tom Novy’s ‘Your Body’. Their set was sharp and well-measured, the tracks deftly fused with some not-so-well known gems also thrown into the melting pot. Then, all of a sudden, it was the new year and the big guns came out to play.
Basement Jaxx began 2007 with a little ‘Hey You’, and bounced their way through hits including ‘Oh My Gosh’, ‘Do Your Thing’ and ‘Right Here’s The Spot’. ‘Where’s Your Head At’ predictably pulled the biggest reaction, and was indeed a highlight of the night, as was the acoustic slant on ‘Romeo’. Whilst the Jaxx’s live show tempo was a bit here and there at times, their stage presence and the quality of each track made for a great gig. When they threw in ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit’, arses left the grass like moths to a flame.
And then Bob Sinclar entered the fray, and on came ‘World Hold On’ which was welcomed with open arms. However, even with such a monster tune, his set came off somewhat lacking. Perhaps it was because he was second on the bill and was saving himself for his headline gig the next day? Some people say it is difficult for a DJ to follow up after a live performance. Whatever the reason, the beat was still there, it was a new year and everyone’s dancing shoes stayed firmly attached.
There was gloss, glamour, booze and big tunes – a hedonist’s delight and at Bondi everyone was one – it was like the MoS Annual had manifested itself into real life and it was all lapped up greedily by the forever up-for-it crowd. And thus the Fuzzy juggernaut continues – it’s a Shore Thing!
