The music’s frenetic pace defies the pre-witching hour. Too much too early? To be confirmed. Bodies confine their grooves to a sway, terrified of premature peaking. Providing a platform for new talent seems important to the headline DJ who’s not afraid to allow others to shine.

The audio therapy provided by support DJs Lewie Day and Luke Chabel has me worried Mr Seaman may sink. Our silhouettes cast shadows on the dancefloor reminiscent of a corroboree. “Listen to the sounds of Luke Chabel, Room!” If voice-over legend Pete Smith has a son, this random Gee-up Man is him. His raw enthusiasm punctuates the evening which is otherwise largely devoid of vocals. An exception, the Chabel-dropped Dance Till The Sunrise, results in a Room that seems enlightened by heightened kinaesthetic awareness.

“Dave Seaman’s in the building, people!” Pete Smith Jnr takes our anticipation up a notch. The families of mirror-balls I’ve come to admire in this venue wink appreciatively at this mass therapy session. The beats are so chunky, you could carve them! We chant in unison to a featured selection – “Don’t rely on this to get you high”.

It’s time to find a good podium for optimum dancing enjoyment. Seaman’s appeal is very testosterone-based but that’s his prog-association, no matter how funky. A gentleman sporting a mullet and trakkie dacks is perfectly decked out for his dose of therapy and acquires the tag, “Business at the front, party at the back, bogan down below!”

“Let’s give it up, Room! For Mr – Dave – Seaman!!!” It is 2:36 am and this veteran of our shores appears in the more intimate DJ booth prompt-side. His entourage is ever-present and includes Infusion’s Jamie Stevens and Nubreed’s Danny Bonicci – craning to watch his tweaks. The showmanship of DJing with vinyl and visually searching for tracks is absent but Seaman still manages to invite a ‘oneness’ to the collective experience.

Responsible for putting Melbourne on the international clubbing map in 2002 thanks to his release ‘Global Underground 0022 – Melbourne’, Seaman’s love of this city has been well-documented. And so a mutual admiration society has developed. This time he is here to promote ‘Therapy Sessions Volume Three’ where Lexicon Avenue provide mixing honours for Disc One. He seems to experiment with ever-changing currents of rhythm on the dancefloor.
Whilst there are not many recognisable tracks within tonight’s showcase, I’m glad to have made their acquaintance.

Too much too early? Well my shoes are off but I’m still rocking! A maniacal, chain-smoking Seaman delivers epic, driving sonic revelations to an interactive and appreciative crowd.

Another seminal set by the Renaissance man. All aboard, H.M.S Seaman – guaranteed to keep you afloat.
