It’s Sunday afternoon. A time of rest and recuperation. The couch is calling you to sink in. The TV is delivering you a barrage of sports coverage to help mindlessly pass the hours. Your head is saying, “Please sir, I don’t want to go outside.” All the while, Susan Ertz repeats to herself: “Millions long for immortality who don’t know what to do with themselves on a Sunday afternoon.”
But I think the solution is here. Get yourself down to Petersham bowling club and enjoy the beats, beer, BBQ and bowls on the first Sunday of every month.
Just $5 will buy you the right to laze around for the day, listening to the varied tunes coming out at neighbour-friendly levels. Another $5 will get you the right to bowl to your hearts content too. Throw in $3.30 beers, a selection of couches strewn around beneath the shades, quesadillas, sunshine, kids milling, lazy smiles and the fact the whole thing is done to support the club itself (do we really need another block of townhouses?), and you can see this is a great way to spend your Sunday. Be it relaxing with family, friends or both.
DJs on the day included but were not limited to: Dazed, Mad Cow, Sakura, Semper Fi, Yumi Stynes, DJ Nothing, Foreign Dub, The Caca (heh) and Ryan Lazy. Between them the played every thing from hip hop, electro beats, breaks, 70’s rock and a fair bit of miscellaneous with the DJs switching between the decks and the BBQ with equal panache.
Meanwhile on the green I took on Kait and John in a pitched bowls battle to 11 points. Kait put up some mean resistance with an aggressive approach, targeting my balls and trying to scatter them across the pitch. John decided to use a deft approach, curling his bowls in again and again, using trajectories like a dwarf uses an axe. But it was all to no avail, even when they started to gang up on me.
Balls to the left and balls to the right, curling in and out, right hand, left hand; the class shone through. Every ball hitting its mark in a tactical perfect display of bowls genius, it was a Sunday afternoon to savour in Petersham as TheDon found his calling. A final score of 11-4-2: you don’t get that every Sunday.
