It’s been three years between stints down under for the radio-friendly Jurassic 5 and Adelaide turned out to show their support for their new album, ‘Feedback’. Bound to garner a variety of supporters, sure enough every hippie and his dog turned out to see J5 do their thing. This time around they were supported by General Knowledge, Foreign Heights and the local town heroes Delta and Staen1. Unfortunately I missed General Knowledge as the show kicked off early at around 7pm. Thebarton Theatre has a strict closing time, so the openers often play to a sparsely populated venue.
Luckily I came just in time to see the set by Foreign Heights, who are comprised of Maya Jupiter, MC Trey and DJ Nick Toth. Their style of music certainly isn’t to my taste and I can think of better things Maya Jupiter could be doing with her time. I personally think she’s someone who should be seen and not heard. I’m yet to check their album but it seemed like some of the crowd (mostly the people in the front row) were enjoying their set. After a short break, it was time for The Lostralian to take the stage, joined by the one and only DJ Staen1 who kicked things off with a brand new trick set that had the crowd hyped by the time Delta busted out from backstage. Unfortunately, he only had time to do a handful of tracks and a couple of short freestyles, but I was amazed by the crowd reception to tracks like Mayday and One Less Gun. All up, it was a very solid set though I personally would have liked to see it go a bit longer.
When Delta had left the stage I took a short drinks break and stopped at the bar to see Australia lose the first cricket final. By now, Jurassic 5 had stepped up to the stage and by this time the whole of Thebby was packed out (except maybe the bleachers). I was surprised at how decent the tracks off the new album sounded live, when as a whole I was disappointed with how it sounded on record. Fortunately, J5 had a much longer slot than the other acts and they were able to play a number of songs from their back catalogue including Hi-Fidelity, Quality Control and What’s Golden. All five members even took out their own little MPCs to bust an impromptu drum session, while DJ Numark took centre stage with a set of mini decks.
The only downer about shows at Thebby Theatre is people go there for the music and not just a few quiet ones, so understandably the drink prices aren’t anything special (and there isn’t any beer on tap). If the door price wasn’t enough to burn a whole in your pocket, then the drink prices probably did it. Overall, the show was well worth the dosh and if you haven’t seen Jurassic 5 live yet but you’re a fan of their music, then I suggest you head down to one of their shows soon.
