After a impressive show at Thebarton Theatre, many punters risked being crushed to get albums, t-shirts, tickets and body parts signed by their favourite hip-hop act, J5. For those with true stamina, it was on to the after party at the virtual home of hip hop in SA, the Electric Light Hotel and Producers Bar.
Rumours had spread that all J5 members would be at the after party to mingle with the crowd and that a possible DJ set by Nu-mark would drop. Perhaps even rapper Charli 2na would once again leave a lasting aerosol art piece on another Adelaide venue wall as he did when Jurassic 5 toured here last and partied on at the Minke Bar.
As the crowd drifted in to th long and narrow Producer’s Bar, Sydney support act Foreign Heights took the stage, and did what they could to keep the party rolling. Although Trey and Maya Jupiter jumped around on stage and made their presence known, the crowd were clearly keener on chilling to the beats of spinner Nick Toth. A lot can be said for female MC’s in Australia and their stuggle against the silent and not-so silent gender politics in the scene, but that’s the stuff for a sociology essay. In my opinion, Trey and Maya Jupiter have certainly hit the right mix with Nick Toth, and their rise to public notoriety is not to be sneezed at.
Local pub lads General Knowledge followed, but had a hard time keeping the crowd under control as a fight broke out between patrons. In this instance a guy walked away with a ripped shirt and a gash above his eye, while three or four other angry young men were shown the door by an assertive security team. While the place was haphazardly redecorated by one angry soul, General Knowledge sadly missed the opportunity to interced, or at least stop the show. If anything their performance fueled the fire while it burned, and is perhaps a sign of their youth. Shortly after the storm, the punters moved to the beer garden leaving the Producers Bar staff to clean up the mess.
With a complete shift in atmosphere, a rumour became reality with Charli 2na working on his tuna fish design once more. Big ups to Charli for coming out and spending time with his fans as he worked at his latest piece til 4am.
