Kings Cross was positively buzzing on Friday night. You know the score, the usual shenanigans with hundreds of party people of all age, shape and size (am I getting older or are they getting younger?), working gals donning inconceivably short skirts, buskers, bouncers, bad boys in their baaaad cars with bass boxes pumping, fingers tapping, letching, leering, too cool for school. Energy levels were full to bursting, charged, fuelled, ready for their Friday night instalment of F.U.N.

My friends and I had chosen to venture to Habit at Candy’s Apartment. Habit is run by three lads (Mark, James and Lee) and this trio has worked together for about 2 and a half years, bringing to Sydney’s dance floors a unique mixture of local talent combined with their own techy beats and powerful melodies. This was to be the first Habit of 2007 and I was looking forward to it!

For those who haven’t ventured to a Habit event, the typical musical mixture encompasses a broad range of styles and consequently they reach and appeal to a wide audience. As ever, like my past Habitual experiences, the crowd was friendly, funky and out to have a good time – none of this pretentiousness that appears to be rife in other Sydney clubs.

We entered Candy’s around 12.30am; the party had started an hour prior and the tunes were pumping and the floor was jumping. Gill Reemo was on the decks and his electro house set was packed full of trancey undertones with deep basslines. Clear, concise mixing and neat and tidy tunage certainly hotted things up nicely. Talking of heat, and I was going to leave this to the end, it was WAY too hot in there. Just ask my friend Al. Sweatbox ahoy. Another good reason to wear a seriously short skirt (not you Al). I reckon those young kids are onto something…

At 1am it was time for the Habit headliner to make his way to the stage. Cosmo Cater is one of Brisbane’s finest and is a regular warm up support act to the big guns – Sasha, Digweed, Judge Jules. Cosmo changed the tone and ramped up the energy. A versatile mixmaster, he packed in the progressive funky beats and the momentum flowed onwards and upwards, as the revellers continued to groove and shake their thang. Cosmo has a great energy behind the decks and is evidently hugely passionate and broadcasts a wide variety of tunes to the masses. Great job.

It was around about this time that I popped into the Second Nature room to check things out. There I discovered an intimate gathering of people all bopping away to the funky beats. For me the back room at Candy’s doubles up as a chill out area because a) it’s a lot cooler (and I’m referring to the temperature here), b) the sound system wasn’t cranked quite so loud and c) it’s usually less crowded. Apart from one minor technical issue – when one of the Habit boys (Mark) quickly flew to the rescue – things chugged along nicely in here and I had a grand time.

Moving back to the main room I discovered that things had quietened down a little and numbers had depleted. The music was still pumping, however it was still too hot and the volume was a few notches on the loud side, as it had been for much of the night. I might start wearing earplugs as this seems to be a common theme across some of Sydney’s night time establishments. The Habit DJs had stepped up to the decks and continued to let things rip, however they were playing to a somewhat diminished crowd. These boys love their music and they put on excellent parties, however I think the heat and the volume were perhaps against them this time.

I chatted to a few revellers and decided at 3.45am to jump ship, so I headed out of Candy’s into the wild jungle we all know and love as Kings Cross. There my night ended… Overall these boys put on a good show as always. Not their best in my experience but I had a cracking night nonetheless. Nice one lads – keep the good times rolling!

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
