Dirt was certainly the theme of last Saturday night at Tank. All up my legs. As I was one of the many not quick enough to make it to shelter in time to save myself from the cruel effects of climate change, I arrived later on at Tank dirty. And damp. And cranky. Dirty, damp and cranky, and in no mood for the bouncer ego that so often accompanies the cardigans and pouts that Tank is so renowned for.
But something about my icy, rat-haired stare must have swayed the men into being extra nice, and I made into Tank without having to bare my teeth.
After heading downstairs, stripping off the soggy layers and defrosting over a bit of a drink and dance, I was all ready for the Germans with a little soul: the Dirt Crew were hitting the stage. All hyped up, the duo did deliver, with something a little more than the prescribed and expected electro/tech/alternative mashup that gets spun in endless concentric circles these days in clubs all across Sydney.
Also known as James Flavour and Break 3000, the older couple showed us exactly what a little bit of age can bring: maturity, knowledge and a whole lot of skills. Known for their eclectic taste in vinyl material, they threw down some sadly forgotten 80’s acid along with some old-skool breakbeat, and seamlessly wove it all into some dancefloor-friendly sexy 90’s beats.
Bringing in some of the less expected tracks, and making us wonder why they’re so rare, it was clear to this uneducated Sydney audience why all the best things in life really do come from Europe.
