“For tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today” – African proverb

The people behind Meccanoid attested the fact that they have done their homework by being able to celebrate 5 years of success in the Melbourne electro discotheque scene on Saturday night. Known for their stylized thematic parties, they weren’t about to let this one go by the way. Futurism was the tenet to entice their droid followers to hop aboard the spaceship enterprise, smartly simulated in the main room, and dance to the electric beats of homegrown talent and the extraterrestrial offerings of the Creme Org from Holland.

When the clock struck 12, delectable dandies paraded the wares of eight independent designers. Die Pretty sauntered onto the stage last, with what one could call sensual robotic force. Perfectly executed, it was the first fashion show I have seen in eons with enough eccentricity to entertain as well as showcase the chic couture immaculately. This is definitely a label to look out for in the future.
www.myspace.com/diepretty4eva. A friend pointed out the one thing that was absent was camera flashes. At this moment I silently kicked myself for not doing photos as well as the review. This deserved to be recorded for designer and fashionata alike. This should be on the prospectus for fashion schools and other discotheques about how to create and implement a great platform for new talent and aesthetic gratification.

For the remainder of the trip, earthlings mixed with a palatial parlour of monochrome minxes, titbits of tectonic tin foil and a menagerie of masked misfits. It did make those of us who didn’t dress up very archaic indeed. The old with the new was a concurrent theme that sprung to mind throughout the night. From the demographics of the crowd to the way parties are run. One thing that struck me as revolutionary (am I showing my age?) was the headphone dance floor. It was bought to my attention this isn’t such a new phenomena and I’m still torn to whether I actually like the idea. Everyone with headphones on seemed to be having a ball ,but whether that is due to a slightly voyeuristic pleasure we humans derive from people looking at us one can only speculate! I found that having no music source to dance/listen to en mass in the only alternate chill out space quite strange. There was no diversion from the main room and people tended to seem displaced without the dynamics or atmosphere that live music simulates. Everyone sort of mulled around with muffled music from the main room being the only source of entertainment.

This was the only glitch that came on to my radar. The crew behind Meccanoid deserves galactic congratulations for a birthday well done. Who knows what is in store for the future….
