After the devastating set by Justice it was time for the next Ed banging instalment from France featuring Sebastian and Kavinsky. The BB crew yet again hopped to a fresh venue with Ambar.
More known for its BrEaKz and Electro house nights, it certainly was a different choice for the BB crew.
However it turned out to be a tasty venue with none of the sound problems that used to haunt Ambar, I have to say the sound was strong and clear so thumbs up Ambar for sorting that out =]
The crowd was the usual mix of fashion militia, indie-victims, and Pre – set extras, with the odd lost clubber and kung-fu master.
The mystery flight DJs were on the wheels of steel getting the crowd bopping with some typical Daft Punk fare, however they did seem to be wrestling with the equipment at times. This could have been the reason a few mixes went astray…
Despite these minor glitches Mystery flight prepped the crowd for the madness that was to be Sebastian and Kavinsky!
When they stepped up to the decks the pair got the attention of the crowd by playing Testarossa’ and really abusing the track using freakier and more experimental mixing tricks and styles which would be taken from tunrtabilsm, techno, and experimental scenes.
This punk-rock mixing style stayed through most of the set. This tore the crowd a new pigeon hole as you could sense many of them were used to the typical generic house/beat mix styles.
The crowd was moshing at times, with very hectic responses to all the ‘risks’ the pair would take mixing wise.
Personally I prefer a band or a DJ to push the limits and try something new and different, and this is what the pair were doing. If they did mess up a mix, its cause they were biting into new territory like a vampire.
The zombie crowd seemed to be forgiving of this too since they were being fed fresh sound sex.
Even when the pair played tracks such as Justice’s ‘We are your friends’ and Rage against the machines ’ Killing in the name of’, they were very glitched up Freaky versions.
This was very fresh to hear rather than the slew of DJs that just play the more typical versions. At times the pair went into some rough shuffle territory which could have easily been at home with the label ‘Shitkatapault’ in Berlin.
Personally I would hold this set up there with one of the best sets I’ve seen all year!
I hope a lot of the indie-dance DJs saw this set as an example that its ok to push the limits, and break them. The crowd will follow you, and even enjoy a fresh tasting sound =]
After the onslaught of Sebastian and Kavinsky Dom took to the decks and fired up some tasty Electro which kept the dwindling weekend warriors happy. Her taste and style was more akin to Berlin than Sydney which was cool, Perhaps we have an Ellen Alien in the making?
Johnny Hotrod was also firing up some sounds and effects over Dom’s set, but didn’t get to take over the reins before the club shut down.
There were smiles all around from this gig, and many of my spies agreed that the majority of the sounds were different and refreshing.
You know its a good gig when every muscle aches the next day from dancing!
See you all at Soulwax ravers!
