After a promising first night at their new venue, I was eager to see how well the second instalment at Heat Nightclub from the Foreshadows Crew would run. With a private party upstairs prior to the event, One A.M. had a ready-made crowd. And the doors opening at 12am saw a steady stream of new punters entering the venue.
With Eve a late scratch from the line-up, Dave – one half of the Nyquist Freq’s – stepped up to the plate to open the night. He kicked things off delivering some laid-back, funky beats at the beginning of his set leading into some fatter, solid stuff as he warmed the crowd up for the rest of the night.
Next up was a set featuring the Mortal Realistiks and Pete of the Signal Drivers. In my opinion these guys were the stand-out set of the night. MC Mortal Flow took a backseat for the night and let Fine China go back-to-back with Pete. The energy these two put out was fantastic. They seemed to bounce off each other as they track after track of solid, banging beats with just a little drum’n’bass thrown in to get the dance floor filled and moving. It was also great to see Pete using Final Scratch, adding an extra element of interest for those who wanted it. Personally, it’s probably the best performance I’ve seen from Fine China and would love to see these guys go back-to-back again!
Perth’s favourite breakbeat couple, Miles and Lisa took their place behind the decks for what was now an energetic crowd. As expected, they delivered a stellar set and watching the two of them on stage it was clear that the respect they have for one another is one of the reasons they work so well together. It was disappointing that people seemed to start to leave during this set as I really do think they deserved the full support of a cranking crowd right to the end.
With numbers inside starting to dwindle there was obviously a little shuffling around to do with the remainder of the line-up as time needed to be made for both Menis and Taxman. Menis was up first showing off his tearout breaks style – something I’m not overly familiar with but am definitely keen to explore a little further thanks to his set. A good mix of classic and new tunes. And last, though certainly not least Taxman rounded off the night with a set of some banging drum and bass tunes to keep the stayers on happy and on their feet.
All up I’d say it was another relative success for One A.M. though the sheer size of the venue does seem to hinder them in creating an atmosphere on the night. While there was certainly nothing lacking and nothing that I could be overly critical of, it would be interesting to see whether or not a move upstairs to a slightly smaller area would make any difference to the overall energy and atmosphere of the night. I’m sure that as time passes and the Foreshadows Productions crew continue to promote their night, we will only see bigger and better things from these guys.
