Being the funky house freak that I am, I was excited to attend the Pure Pleasure Experience – Funky House Essentials event at Equilibrium last Saturday night. I had never visited the World Square venue before but I had heard great things from a few mates of mine, and was anxious to check it out for myself.

La Fiesta Sound System was in full swing when I rolled in at 11pm and the modest crowd on the ground floor of the club was made up of all sorts, having a great time. I grabbed a drink and enjoyed the funky-arse beats and fantastic vocals echoing down to the back of the club. The floor space is amazing and the open air half of the venue is great for chilling out and having a chat with friends.

I then wandered upstairs to level 2 where the Pure Pleasure party was kicking into gear. I took in the views of George Street below and sprawled out on one of the massive beds that lined the walls – they definitely make for a cool and interesting addition to the orange décor that covers everything else. DJ Yogi was laying down some huge vocals with his groovy tunes. He really gets into his stuff which is always great to see in a DJ, and his voice really is divine.

But this time there still wasn’t much of a crowd up there, and I can kind of understand why. A $15 entry fee was a little much to ask considering downstairs was free and absolutely pumping, and the balloons everywhere from a previous function made me feel like I was crashing a party. The bar had a single staff member serving drinks making the wait unnecessarily drawn out, and although Yogi’s tunes were fab, you could argue they were better suited for Sunday afternoons at Greenwood.

I could hear a bit of La Fiesta downstairs and they sounded hot. I went and had a boogaloo for a while with them and waited for resident DJ Ange’s set. She kicked off well as a few more punters had come upstairs for the party, but they could definitely have done without the MC who sounded like he had just finished a gig at a Blue Light Disco. Bob Frisky thumped out some great tunes but was wasted, as unfortunately there was not the type of crowd there to give it the full appreciation it deserved.

In saying all this, I really want to check it out again. I’m not sure whether or not being in competition against the V Festival’s 35,000 strong crowd had anything to do with the vibe of the Pure Pleasure party on Saturday night, but I’ll definitely be at the next event to find out for myself!

It was unfortunate that it wasnt a little more packed up there on Saturday night, however with that said it is very hard for any non Kings Cross, Darling Harbour or Oxford St venue to draw a decent crowd for non-weekly parties. Well done to the PPE for wh
