BBA crew certainly know how to run things, their parties are always excellent affairs. It’s not so much the artists that they bring out, it’s the whole effort they put into their parties, the sound is A1, their flyers/artwork are quality, and their crowning glory would have to be the effort that goes into decorating venues.
Arriving at the den that is the Hi-Fi Bar headz were greeted with another impressive set up that could even surpass stage design at bigger events. The Hi Fi Bar is a venue that really needs dressing up, without anything it’s really boring and plan. The crew had decorated the place with neon cyborg busts, backdrops and many coloured lights flashing over stretched pieces of white material, giving a futuristic feel to the room, perfectly in place with the futuristic feel of Matrix and Futurebound’s sounds. The decks were halfway onto the dance floor placing the artists right in the thick of things, adding to the intimacy of the night.
I arrived just to catch Dust’s last couple of tunes; taking over from her was Tobias. Tobias started off with Misti:cal’s tune Eleventh Hour featuring provocative rhymes from DRS. He kept things fairly low key with a few more laid back beats and quite a few more selections from that Misti:cal album.
Next on was one of Melbourne’s favourites Seven. Seven’s sets are always constructed so that they entice you in, initially you may just be enjoying the tunes on the sidelines, but by the time he gets mid-way into his set, you’ll be drawn in and probably on the dance floor. This time his set was its usual consistency, a very solid selection of techy numbers, peaking just at the right time for Matrix and Futurebound to step up.
The guys have been touring in support of their album Universal Truth, so it was hardly a surprise when they started out with a forthcoming single Knite Riderz, a heavy track featuring the distinct MC talent of Sypdor.
The thing I really like about Matrix is the balance between the disco sounding business, and the darker techy stuff. There’s just something about the bass that makes it irresistible to dance to!
The pair mixed back to back style, and really it was a seamless set, there was a substantial selection of their own releases (one of my recent favourites being Skyscraper) with some classic teasers thrown in, including some old Ed Rush and Optical, Johnny L, Ram Trilogy and Mist’s classic Outerspace.
There were a couple of sections of the set I didn’t enjoy, both dropping some huge noisy party tunes, but they kept things moving along enough to balance out these moments with some disco and liquid sounds.
Although the numbers were slightly down on what I might have expected for this gig, there was hardly one person standing still during the sets, providing an energetic atmosphere.
I left the venue exhausted but fulfilled; the elements of a great night had been looked after, the sound was great, the tunes were tops and the place looked awesome!
