Following a hard day’s partying at V Festival, my entourage and I were looking for somewhere to go and hang out afterwards. Nothing too intense, but we wanted something tasteful and somewhere that we could have a bit of a boogie. The new monthly night Galaxy at Melt Bar had caught my eye, so we headed on down. I liked the sounds of ‘cosmic and inter stellar’ that had been promised in the ‘Whats On’ section, and coupled with boogie and disco it fit the bill perfectly.
Upon arriving at Melt Bar on Kellet Street we were greeted by (shock, horror) a friendly door man and a very warm vibe. The Melt Bar itself is an awesome venue, well structured with heaps of great spaces to set-up camp and VERY friendly bar staff. No posing going on here, just great service and a venue to match. Upon entering to the beautifully warm disco sounds of Simon Caldwell, we were instantly seduced by the whole set-up there.
As I made my way towards the DJ booth, something seemed quite odd as I crossed the dance floor: no fluoroscopic gear and not a headband in sight! Astoundingly, it seemed full of normal people having plain old fun, and things couldn’t get much better. I grabbed a few more beers, had some more dancing and was really enjoying myself as Simon Caldwell continued his journey through nu-school disco, soulful house and just great party music.
Mark Walton took to the decks shortly after Caldwell and proceeded to take things in a slightly different direction. Plenty of funk and boogie, but more of a breaks orientated set. Lots of All Good Funk Alliance pricked my ears and the get down was sweet! Proceedings finished up shortly after three, with at least two encores to top it all off.
Galaxy may be new to the Sydney scene, but the promoters are promising they have a string of international guests lined up to make the event one of the strongest new dance music ventures in the city, with not a mention of the evil ‘electro-house’ (shudder) to be heard. But advertising is going to be kept to a minimum, so make sure you seek it out! If you like you dance music with soul, depth and genuine musical prowess, instead of an audio equivalent of three-minute noodles, then Galaxy is one to watch!
