It comes as a shock to enter Room at 1am and hear the roar of the crowd appreciating Tomiie’s tunes. Usually arriving at this time would allow for taking in the warm-up DJ but not tonight – should have done my stretches at home!
Securing a roomy position on the dancefloor, it’s time to carve it up. As usual, the prog scene presents a disappointing boy/ girl ratio – too many blokes and not enough skirt! This is fine if you fancy picking up but a pain to avoid eye-contact if you’re serious about your beats. A little less conversation a little more dancin’!
Tomiie absolutely rips it up! Exultant cries punctuate the introduction of each track which builds, and builds, and builds. Just when you think the cranking intensity has reached eleven, train sounds start comin’ atcha! It’s almost too much but we know what we’re here for.
Understated in his demeanour, Tomiie expertly reads the dancefloor worshippers. He playfully extends the lead-in to dropping the final hook. It borders on unbearable but we forgive him as soon as we take in the sounds – bewitching! Satoshi, the great drop-tease! Usually you wait for one track like this per set – Tomiie produces a set full of them. Plenty of “Glad I came!” moments.
One such moment arrives as we receive a full dose of Gui Boratto’s ‘Arquipelago’. Double dose of happiness – my companion and I have just heard this face-melter on the way here in the car. It’s on the Aram Chapers ‘Honkytonks Last Dance’ CD.
Here to promote his latest contribution to the Renaissance Master Series (Part 9), I doubt Tomiie will have trouble shifting units. Hypnotic music for your fantasies – there’s not enough of this shit around and it’s cathartic. Real hands-in-the-air stuff without being cheesy. 3:30am comes around too soon and it’s almost a relief! I don’t know how much longer I would be able to keep this pace up.
Possibly the clumsiest gap I have heard between DJs follows. Don’t really like DJs to be bigged-up by a promoter with a microphone, but that might just be me. Chris Meehan takes a while to get going but he gets going. If you were a tourist and only spent one night out in Melbourne and it happened to be tonight, you would think it was one happening corner of the Universe.
