So who was it that was actually sporting an afro hairdo at Kink on Saturday night, you might ask yourself? Well in spite of what his name might suggest, it certainly wasn’t the headliner behind the decks Fuzzy Hair. The sleek and refined haircut of Fuzzy was instead well suited to the sleek style of his set. Or alternatively, maybe the sleekness of the vibe that Fuzzy Hair brought along to Kink that evening. Either way, the crowd kept on dancing!

Although I was familiar with some of Fuzzy Hair’s remix and production work, including the hit Right About Now and his reinterpretations of Inaya Day’s Nasty Girl and Erick Morillo’s Dancin’, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from a Fuzzy Hair DJ set. But his performance ending up speaking a lot louder than any of my previous expectations. Energetic and sometimes quite intense, he delivered a variety of styles alongside the usual electro selection, with some of the tracks played including Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s Waiting For, The Creeps, the TV Rock remix of The Others, Buy Now’s For Sale and of course a few of his own productions.

But what impressed the crowd at Kink was Fuzzy Hair’s sheer determination to kick the ‘bleeps’ and the ‘booms’ into high gear and start bangin’ out some of the best techno and tribal house tracks heard in Sydney for quite a while. It was definitely a little more unique and diverse than what the Kink punters are generally accustomed too. While the set was a tad illogical in its progressions at times, that didn’t stop the crowd from lapping up every moment of the occasion.

Along with Fuzzy Hair, the usual Kink suspects like Illya, Shamus and Goodfella made sure the main room dance floor stayed full for most of the night. Meanwhile in the side room, Dan Adair, The Jackal, James Taylor and Frenzie all demonstrated why breaks remains a popular style of music in Sydney, and why the Broke-N-Beats room is a sterling place to take cover from all the musical mayhem of the main room. In all, another great night at Kink was enjoyed by all.
