Sydney is certainly feeling the chill as winter draws closer and takes over the city. Scarves, hats and hefty jackets have made their annual comeback and we’re feeling inclined to stay wrapped up in warm confines. Nestled up at home on a Friday night with your slippers and a hot cup of cocoa is one option. Getting your glad rags, drinking champers and visiting the Civic Hotel is another. Last Friday after little deliberation I locked in ‘Option B’ and ventured to the Civic for the Seamless ‘Winter Sessions’ to get a fill of electro. Take your scarves off kids…we’re going in!

Arriving shortly after 10pm, I bypassed the top bar and headed straight downstairs to the main club. The Civic exudes intimacy and comfort, a sparklingly plush disco den that’s specifically designed for revelers of the dancing and socialising kind. Padded white-booth seating (great for bouncing off), numerous mirror balls suspended amongst the colorful lights, velvety fabric wall coverings, unisex toilets (ooh matron!). To top all that off there were various Seamless plasma screens displaying entrancing visuals, encompassed the DJ booth on stage. “This could be an audiovisual treat of mass proportions,” I thought to myself. Well let’s see shall we…

A smattering of people were scattered throughout the venue, chilling in the booth seats and warming up the dance floor. Tish Tash was mixing up a delightful dish of funky house. Her tune selection was fresh and fruity and she got things simmering along nicely. A steady stream of people entered the venue and numbers rose rapidly. Kio, promoter for Seamless and resident DJ, stepped up and pushed things in a different direction, laying down an awesome driving electro tune. He ramped things up and as the club started to fill, the dance floor started pumping and the vibe started rocking. He maintained momentum throughout his set, technically sound and pumping out some chunky tunes, letting rip with a final Starkillers’ Promises.

Seamless resident Linesy took over and introduced a harder selection to the evening. Notorious for his superb musical repertoire and upbeat crowd pleasers, he took things to deeper, darker depths. The set was well put together and the mixing tight, but that the tougher techier tunes stole away from the uplifted atmosphere that had been created and the flow was interrupted.

Headphones were exchanged, and the next spinster stepping up to the decks was Torbynik, another one of Seamless’ promoters and residents. He drove the pace to a different plane, introducing a series of driving and uplifting electro tunage. Pumped full of energetic basslines with some nice melodies to boot, Torbynik pulled out all the stops and the place was jumping. Ben Kelly was next up and cranked out some dirty electro, again a subtle but enjoyable change from the other styles on the night. The night was brought to a close a little while before 5am and this was when I donned my scarf and made for the door.

Overall it was a cracking night. The Seamless boys put on a riveting show, one that not only stimulated aurally but visually as well. The tune selection was excellent, and while a readjusted lineup may have added to the musical fluency, it was still an impressive event and great to see a promotion team working towards differentiating themselves by focusing on new, upcoming music and showcasing some fantastic graphics. The good news is there will be more Seamless parties on the way shortly with monthly installments at the Civic Hotel, so if I were you I’d get on down there to check it out. You certainly won’t be disappointed!
