Passing the bins full of destroyed and discarded umbrellas, walking through that icy winter air: it was only a few steps to the newly refurbished Soho Bar located in Sydney’s Potts Point. Craving warmth and some good tunes, the very first Take 2 event sounded like a sure bet for a lively party. At only $5 before 10pm and $10 after that, the price was definitely right. Stepping into the place, the mood was set. The music was rocking, the four-turntable set up was a welcome addition and the alcohol was flowing. With the diverse crowd having braved the weather to be there, all were up for a good party. It was a real juxtaposition of the sophisticated and the carefree: from music fiends to fashion heads, every one was out to get down and do their thing.
It would be impossible to try and recollect all the great tracks I heard throughout the night. It’s always good to hear Vaughan Mason & Crew’s classic Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll. The S.W.A.T DJ’s spun many boogie anthems like this alongside newer dancefloor heat and other obscure gems. Originally from the Blue Mountains, now Sydney based they mixed up a storm something proper and they are definitely a DJ crew to look out for.
DJ Frenzie was up next. Showing and proving in everything he has ever put his mind to over the years, he completely tore it up on the mix once again. Bringing that NY block party vibe straight off the bat, he started off his set with a bunch of killer old school hip hop tracks. It was dope just by itself to hear Just Four’s Jam To Remember in a Sydney bar. Frenzie dropped, blended and cut in a truckload of jewels and precisely rocked double copies of original breaks throughout the mix. Every time Frenzie spins he’s always got the heat that has everyone on the floor losing themselves in the music.
It is a great move to begin a set with the Roy Ayers Running Away. Noel Boogie kept the party rocking: mixing, doubling and cutting it up on the 1 and 2s. With an impromptu appearance from DJ Diaz scratching away and Zonk on the trumpet both bringing an extra dimension to the record playing. The party reached another pinnacle when Manzel Space Funk was playing, Diaz was cutting it up and Zonk was providing a damn funky interpretation of the recorded grooves. Proof that music is one of the strongest drugs out there. It was such a fresh performance, a real in the moment experience.
If you want an unpretentious and feel-good vibe, plenty of great, funky, booty shaking tunes from a slew of party-rocking DJs, than look no further than Take 2. Now a monthly event, make sure you check out the next one in July.
