Heading down William Street last Friday night for the Cutters party with the Cut Copy DJs, Knightlife and the Bandits residents, I was a little unsure of what would come about in the depths of Club 77. But when I hopped out of the cab the line down the road told me that these guys had brought the party with them. Very popular indeed, little ol’ 77 was going to be packed to the rafters. And packed it was, making it very hard to see the stage through all the baseball caps and crazy-patterned cardigans.
But the important thing was that I could still hear the music, with the night starting off with Wade Da Pope and Neil Down, followed by Dan de Caires, Kato and then Knightlife, all playing variations of your average hands-in-the-air house and electro. At one point I seriously thought it was 5am and I was downstairs at Arq (minus the shirtless boys), the music had so many vocals and uplifting melodies it was on the brink of being quite commercial… But the crowd appeared to be enjoying it.
It was a pretty normal sort of club night with people boogying on down to the music, until the cops showed up at about 2am… The lights came on and we thought the night was all over, but they just stood at the bottom of the stairs, took a good look at the packed venue and then departed. I’m not sure what made them leave, but hopefully it was because they decided to use their commonsense and not turn a few hundred people out onto William Street all at once.
After the cops left there was a cheer and the music started again. The party atmosphere increased, even the music seemed to be getting louder as the Cut Copy DJs cranked Daft Punk’s One More Time. It was as if people decided they’d better get their party boots on quick smart as the night had come so close to being over, or quite possibly they’d simply dropped all their drugs at once (and I don’t mean on the floor). But that was when the party seemed to start. Cut Copy DJs continued with their usual brand of very 80s sounding house and techno, with lots of vocals, even chucking in the Eagles track One of These Nights. I also remember hearing Technotronic’s Pump Up the Jam at one point…
All this music and with very few records in sight. While beside the stage watching the Cut Copy DJs play for 30 minutes, I only saw a single record played. When my mate asked Tim Hoey (vocalist and guitarist) when he last bought a record, he replied “about a month ago.” This was reflected their DJ set, and while it was fun to have a boogie to and hear some old tracks mixed in with housey, electro-synth sounds, it was nothing that I hadn’t really heard before. But having said that, the dancefloor was packed with happy, smiling faces all night, all looking like they were having a fantastic time and singing along to the music. I think most of the punters would agree that they enjoyed themselves, although I was a little disappointed I didn’t hear a few more interesting sounds or something a bit more memorable and special.
