Woot woot! I had so much fun at the last Risque (as did everyone else) that I couldn’t wait for the next one. Finally the wait was over and it was time to head to Circus once again for a night, as Hercules says, that is slightly indecent but always entertaining.
After a quick pit stop at Oportos I arrived at Circus at 11:30, in time to catch the last half an hour of Max Koenig. I hadn’t seen Max before and I could see immediately why he’s a regular fixture at Risqué. He played jackin’ type electro house and really had the dancefloor in a frenzy, it was well packed with some really enthusiastic dancing going on! One track deserving of a mention was the remix of Rage Against the Machine’s Killing In The Name Of as it went right off!
Up next was DJ Promo. This was Promo’s last set before he departed our shores for his hometown of the UK, and he played a chunky, proggy, electro type of set. To be a bit critical I thought the sounds remained a little too much the same throughout his two-hours, and also ate into some of Mike Jules’ time unfortunately.
The wait was worth it and when Mike started, everyone knew about it. It was awesome! It was housey, it was jackin’, it was alive and it was just fantastic. Mike just gets better every time I see him and everyone was feeling the same way this night. It was so electric and the mixing was tight, making good use of the effects.
One of the funniest things this night was Mike and Effin See (Joe) wearing matching ‘F**KING TECHNO’ t-shirts and white laboratory jackets. Part of the reason for this was that that they were playing somewhat of a ‘versus’ set. They played off each other really well: while Joe was deeper and more techy, Mike strayed more towards the uplifting. This was Joe’s first time using CDJs in a nightclub, and you couldn’t even tell.
Unfortunately the numbers were starting to thin out a bit by the time Little Chris joined the duo for a couple of tracks. He played a wicked Eric Prydz remix of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which is sure to be a big hit. But the night belonged to Mike Jules. He was just on fire and is such an underrated DJ, but definitely not by those who know him well. He played a great track with a male vocal talking bout house music, and it just about blew my mind.
Risqué makes for a great way to spend a Friday night. With fresh young DJs, a great venue and up for it crowd, its no wonder I can’t wait for the next one to roll on by!
