Techno, techno, techno. That was the theme of the night, and boy did the boys deliver! Those who attended this night know exactly what I’m talking about here. Subservice is a relatively new night to Sydney, but it has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception to become a fabulous underground night showcasing some incredible artists. The focus seems to be on quality techno and underground house, though the organisers insist they not be pigeonholed into a specific genre or style.
This time round Dave Pham was on the bill, along with Subservice residents Dennis Williams and Andrew Wowk along with Glitch and Simon Caldwell who I’ve seen around the traps on numerous occasions. All quality local artists who are really committed to the Sydney music scene, and the electronic dance in general. These guys have their fingers (and toes!) on the pulse and deliver wherever you manage to catch them.
Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get my boozy self to the Civic in time to see Dennis Williams or Andrew Wowk, though I did manage to score one of their Subservice promo CDs that were lying about and I must say, it’s a shame I missed them. Next time boys, I’ll be front and centre!
Glitch were solid as they always seem to be, a funky minimal techno/tech house beat whomping out of the speakers to build up the anticipation of the crowd. Rocking up with a belly full of vodka to hear that sort of sound was fantastic, and I headed straight for the dancefloor. I thought I was moving in perfect time to the beat, though I am sure I was dancing more like a drunken fool than I believed I was. Despite that, I loved the set and it was a seamless transition to Dave Pham – the man of the evening.
I’m told that Dave Pham has been around for a long time, and used to play some extremely hard techno, almost in the hardcore category. Lucky for us, his sound has changed to one of the most varied techno I have heard – electro/rave/minimal/house, you name it and it was likely that Dave Pham was playing it. It was exciting to listen to it because unlike a lot of other DJs, he explored a track and warped it into his own sound.
All the energy from the crowd must have gotten him really going because when I finally was forced off the dance floor by my woosey head, he was really delivering some smashing bang-crash techno. Catch this man from Melbourne should whenever you get the opportunity because he’s one impressive DJ, that’s for sure.
The next Subservice is scheduled for the 3rd August, and although the lineup isn’t announced yet, I’ll be there for sure. Though next time I might leave the drinking until I get there!
