Capitol lit up again on Friday night, hosting the hed kandi: the disco kandi tour. With an eclectic mix of both people and music the crowd was slow to trickle through those double doors.

Local lad Damian John graced the stage first up for an hour set. This chap has come quite a way from the Cott and managed to set the scene for a night of busy beats. Adam Kelly had his hour of power from ten. As always he managed to build the crowd up, mixing in some interesting tunes, putting his own spin on this famous name brand.

Steffan Gooch seemed to fill the club, though this may have been due to his timing (11.00-12.00). It seemed odd that upstairs wasn’t opened any earlier as standing elbow to elbow really restricts the moves! Anyway Gooch lifted the crowds’ spirit and certainly their feet with funky tunes at a pleasing beat.

At about 12.00 the woman of the night came out to play! Miss Kelly Marie filled the room with not only the tunes she plays so well but also her effervescent nature. Playing along with the crowd she mixed in tunes like ‘Time and time again’. She was so into it that you couldn’t help but loose track of time.

Before we knew it Andy Warburton had taken control, but it was great to see Miss Kelly not leave the stage, instead enjoying a boogie for the appeasing crowd. At 1.45 the ever popular ‘Put your hands up for Detroit’. As much as I enjoy that bass line and vocal it was repeated at least four times during the night – doesn’t anyone check their play list with anyone else!!! ‘Call you my bitch’ was dropped around this time and then at 2.30 Chemical Brothers ‘Born Slippy’ worked its way into the room. The crowd didn’t falter, taking one tune on after another.

Rob Sharp featured from 3.00. This guy had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand! Talk about saving some of the best for last. He blew everyone away and raised the side-sitters to their feet once again. ‘Beautiful scene’ was dropped about 3.30 followed by the best mix of ‘Put your hands up for Detroit’ with Pink Floyds ‘Brick in the Wall’. Seriously this was the one time ‘Detroit’ should have been played. At 4.30 Faithless ‘Insomnia’ enticed the crowd to keep moving, though by this time all the pretty young things with heels the height of Mt Everest had retired taking their selections for the evening with them (I know meow!). Sharp kept up till the end, even trying to play an encore until the security shut him down, leaving the crowd mid-beat.

A most enjoyable event, with special mention to Kanchana for his percussion styling. Personally I love having a percussion beat at a gig. There is something so tribal and primitive about it. I guess the beat highlights the heartbeat and gives more freedom to movement. Anyway a standing ovation to this guy!
