Every time I walk up to see the sprawling masses of Onelove punters billowing through the alleyways around Tank, I always ask myself why. Why do I do this? Certainly not the club to win the awards for most efficient or pleasant mannered door staff, I am constantly amazed by the amount of time the kids drooling to get admitted into the club are willing to wait. Standing and inching forward by the hour I grow increasingly annoyed and by the time I reach the doors, I’m positive that if every single last one of the Berlin DJs who have been playing on rotation on my home stereo couldn’t put this disgruntled punter in a good mood. A mere bustle and a shove downstairs proved me wrong.
The Potbelleez smashed out a set that confirmed their position as some of the most consistently crowd-pleasing DJs in Sydney’s. The Irishmen Dave Goode and Jonny Sonic really never seem to be able to put a foot wrong when it comes to their lives sets. I went with the preconception that these boys knew how to play some pretty dirty, mashy, bangin’ electro house, but their technical skills behind the deck were truly something to take note of. Working with six decks now and all the right tools, they manage be to able to incorporate both their personal styles, with Jonny being more tech orientated and Dave preferring a cleaner, fuller house sound. The result is a set that doesn’t just bang on, but progresses and keeps the crowd dancing and the audience pumping. With remixes of M.I.A and a few local Sydney tunes, the boys knew how to flavour their sets. The sound system at Tank has to be given kudos for really being able to hold up and surpass what the crowd is demanding from it. At once and clear and clean, and also very very loud.
Walking out with ringing ears at 7am, I think in retrospect perhaps a little too loud, dare it be said. Glancing at the alleyway that I stood so bitterly in for over an hour last night to be seen into Tank, I reflect on the last eight hours of straight dancing. I feel all the blisters forming on my feet and wipe the sweat from my brow, and I think, yeah, this is why I do it.
